Default For Sale 1992 968

So, finally putting it up for sale. Should I just do a link from craigslist, or post all of the pix here?
I haven't settled on an asking price yet.

I want to give rennlisters first opportunity, very negotiable.
Below is the history and add without all of the pix.

I am unsure of the price right now. Craigslist listing is for 11,000. OBO

"For Sale
1992 Porsche 968. Approximately 93,xxx miles (Odometer replaced; it shows 86,xxx) 6 speed manual. Amazon green, I think. Looks blue to me. My Daily driver.

The Good:

  • Complete car, including belly pans, tool kit, spare tire etc.
  • New timing belt
  • New tensioner
  • New cam pads
  • New cam chain
  • All new parts for front of engine service. Seals, hoses, belts, rollers bearings, thermostat.
  • Heads professionally rebuilt (new valves, guides, seals, decked) reported cost of about 3k. I have my doubts about the costs.
  • New head gaskets
  • New water pump
  • New front engine wiring harness
  • Fuel injectors serviced
  • All new sensor
  • New tires
  • New brakes, rotors pads etc
  • New Brake fluid reservoir
  • New Power steering hose and reservoir
  • Beautiful original cup wheels. One has scratches from tire shop laying it on its face.
The bad:

  • Needs paint. Clear coat in bad shape on all weather surfaces.
  • Some body work – small amount of rust on top windshield and surface rust where clear coat peeled on fenders. Body rubber seals, some side molding clips will need replaced when paint work done
  • R taillight was cracked when mechanic pushed the car. Repaired and water tight, but visible.
  • Hood dented from previous owner letting the hood close on the uninstalled cam cover. See pic.
  • Tear in headliner above drivers’ visor. I just now did this by wiping it down.
  • Dash cracks
  • Rear carpet is toast
  • Air bag light on dash (see narrative).
  • AC needs recharge (I believe it is still R-12)
The rest of the story.
This was a “Barn find car”. It sat out uncovered for several years (I tried to buy it for 5 years) after a reported/suspected TB fail. I say suspected because of the $$ spent on the heads, but believe that it was a tensioner fail. The mechanic did not have or use internet access and was unable to put everything back together. The paint is in bad shape. Clear coat on the weather surfaces is damaged/peeled, with paint fading. Would need a respray, with minimal body work. Car looks great from 10-15 feet.

I bought the car in 2012/2013. Was going to be a project for my 12-year-old son and I. Even though the head had already been rebuilt and installed, we took it off so I could be confident. Everything looked good. He lost interest after the head removal, so I decided I wasn’t going to build this without him and packed it with desiccant bags, stored it in my garage until late 2017. Re-installed with new head gaskets and began the buildup process. Timing belt, new tensioner, new harness, all new gaskets, sensors, water pump, timing rollers, etc.

Put it all back together and it started on the first try! During first start the MAF wiring got cut by the fan. I weather proof spliced it. Put new brakes and tires all the way around, got it ready for MD. State inspection. It failed inspection for a windshield ding, a tail light bulb and Odometer inop.

Apparently during the inspection, the mechanic reset the odometer while driving and broke the gear. I bought new gears and rebuilt. I put it back in and then the speedometer didn’t work. In the end I bought a new gauge cluster, redid the light tunnels to add Blue LED’S, filled the miniscule windshield ding and it passed inspection. Now my daily driver (on good weather days) since 10-2018.

Disclaimer. When I was working the speedo issue I disconnected the air bag. It then illuminated an airbag warning on the dash. I could not get this to clear so I took the bulb out. Apparently, this is a normal occurrence when removing the steering wheel if the battery was left connected. This light will need to be reset at a dealership.

Reasons for selling.

  1. My son is off to college and I was not giving him this car without him being familiar with the mechanics of it.
  2. I have back issues and using a clutch is not fun any longer.
  3. I have two 928’s that I am restoring. The proceeds from this sale will go to my engine build.
  4. Wife is not OK with a third Pcar taking up her parking spot.
So, this is a great story of saving a car from the savages of time. Interior is in great shape except for the hole I just put in the headliner, dash cracks and rear carpet. It crystalized during its long time out in the weather. It has a good sound system with a factory Alpine 6 disk changer in the glove compartment. The wiring has not been tinkered with so this car is as was from factory. I am officially the third owner but really the true second. The mechanic ended up getting it titled to him when the original owned died waiting for him to figure out how to put it together. Original owner had it regularly serviced. He even kept a diary of the fuel fill ups!

There is a small leak from the rear main seal. It shows wet but doesn’t leave a spot. It does have a minor leak from somewhere in the power steering system, but again, it is minimal.
Cooling system, oiling system, charging system, wipers, windows, sun roof, alarm, lights, clutch, seats, breaking system, all work as they should.

This car is a blast to drive!
Photos are of car without being detailed and in the rain. Just washed and not vacuumed. No extreme cleaning or polishing has been done. There is a bit of a covering separation at the glove box lid. As I was wiping it down, I tore the headliner above passenger side.
I have disclosed all that I know, car is as is no warranty or other implied.

Thanks,

John
