Default Removing crankshaft key

So I'm in the process of tearing down my old 83 NA engine that I managed to crack two of the cylinder walls in (long story, ask if you really wanna know) and I'm down to trying to remove the oil pump so i can pull the crankshaft. All pistons are out and all thats left on the block at this point is the crank, oil pump, and water pump.

I seriously can't get this damn key to budge guy's. I've done everything from soaking it with pb blaster and trying to rock it out with a pair of end cutters like van demonstrates on YouTube, to literally grabbing the key with a pair of vice grips and yanking up. It's stuck so bad that I can lift the entire front end of the block off the ground just holding onto the key. I want to get this oil pump off because It's a fairly low mileage unit and I'm thinking it would be a good candidate to go into my other car that's having oil pressure problems at the moment, but it just won't budge. Any suggestions?

No sir I have not, and it has just struck me that I am being very bullheaded to have not tried that already. Left my torch at a worksite today, I'll try that tomorrow

^+1.

Heat can solve a lot of problems.

It's going to take a bit to get the crank up to temp, be patient.

Just for clarification, I'm looking to heat the crankshaft end, and try to keep the heat away from the key itself, correct?

That would be how I'd tackle it first. If that doesn't work, heat the key to see if it's expansion will break whatever is locking it in place.

Heat, and or a chisel/hammer alternating front/back on the key to rock it out

You need a Vise-Grip slide hammer to yank it out. Make it up using Vise-Grips, length all thread, smooth tube (PVC pipe), couple large washers, couple of nuts to fit and a large deep well socket for the slide. You can nest one deep well socket in another to add more slide weight. Been touting this tool for speed and reference sensors for years now. Good luck.

I'd hit that thing with some freeze before heat... will hit the key before the shaft and it may give enough to free from the crank... there's a lot around that may not like the flame...

I fought that beast for several days before I got it out. I ended up using a Dremel to cut a little slot in one end of it that I could then get a screwdriver into and lever it up.

cheers, glad you got it out. after cleaning and reassembly, a dab of anti-seize will help next time.

Oh it's not going back together. The block on this engine has two cracked cylinder walls and one of the pistons is shattered. I'm taking everything not aluminum out and just scrapping it, getting the crankshaft ground if it's salvageable and selling the connecting rods. The only thing I plan on keeping is the oil pump.
