924 Yard Find - Help with inspection
Hello guys, long time lurker first time poste.
I am in discussion with someone in my neighbourhood that’s had this sitting in their front yard for ages.
Can someone tell me a bit more about this model just by the pictures? I can grab more next time if needed.
What kind of things do you suggest I should be looking for when inspecting this? Owner says it ran when parked 3 years ago.
Thank you

Nice looking wheels. Not to discourage you but I would suggest taking the wheels and putting another 924 behind them. Front end damage and general overall appearance make this one a potential money pit before even getting into the mechanicals. I believe your money could be better spent if you want a 924/944. YMMV

If that's where it's been sitting, I'm gonna bet there are corrosion issues underneath. That's what I would inspect first on this 924. Also, confirm if the lower edge is supposed to be painted black like that and if not factory, it would suggest previous body work

"Owner says it ran when parked 3 years ago".
Uh huh. If you get this for free or little money then you'll have a parts car that will save you mucho dinaro on the next 924S/944 that you should be looking at. Remember what Ferdinand Porsche never said: "One man's Porsche yard decoration is another man's money pit".

At first I didn't like them, but after looking at the pictures a few times, the wheels have grown on me. They look like 90s Mustang wheels.
Just to echo what others have said, unless you're getting it for free, SUPER cheap, or for parts car purposes, probably not worth it. Now, if you have a daily driver, some spare cash, and want a project car, maybe this is for you, but either way, you most likely have a bunch of work ahead of you. "Much danger I fear in his training.", as Yoda said, haha. But seriously, in an attempt to be helpful, check the floor pans as well, as with many Porsche models, the drains cause water to collect and then rust out the floor (ask me how I know). Make sure the brake/clutch pedal doesn't go all the way to the floor and If you have the tools, turn the engine over slowly (24mm socket and a breaker bar). Maybe this thing is just well weathered and may not be as in bad shape as it looks. We would all love to see another 924/944 get saved, but we'd hate to see you get screwed over in the process too.

What year is it? It looks to me like a 924S not a 924, big difference because the 924S is mechanically an early 944 with skinny fenders - they were produced in 1987 and 1988. It will be marked on the rear if it is a 924S. Also one look at the engine and you will see the difference.

you can get into real trouble and expense trying to resurrect an old 924, the first thing is the old cis system. Hard to get parts for and probably the fuel distributor, gas tank, warm up regulator and injectors will probably all need to be replaced

You can get into trouble and expense trying to redo a 924S/944 also. If this is a late 70's early 80's machine you really have to be that area of entry level Porsche enthusiast to see any value in restoring that ride. I like the 924 body style but after owning a couple of late model cars I could have spent my cash/time on a 911 of the same area and maybe see a little return on my investment. But would I be excited to see this parked down the street? Heck yeah!

My first thought was about which year it is. Seeing 4 lugs but having a spoiler is a head scratcher. Never the less, if the price is right this might be just be the car for you. See if it starts, determine if it is a 924 (likely) or a 924s. If it makes you feel better, these cars are usually bargain priced in Canada. Decide if you like the looks of a 924 more than a 944 and begin from there. Check the buy and sell on kijiji or Facebook. We're here to help.
