Default Need help sourcing bolts ...

I've searched the net and not found what I am looking for. Perhaps someone out there can knows.

I'm looking for a source for metric bolts with captive washers, in yellow zinc, that I can purchase in small quantities (10-100 pieces).

Belmetric.com.....most of these online suppliers source their product from China Made. I am always sceptical of China Made for a key bolt that impacts my life or engine failure.

McMaster-Carr only carries limited SAE sizes and Belmetric doesn't carry them. No winner this time.

I had to buy some replacement intake manifold bolts... they were expensive from Pelican (I think they were Porsche branded).

I source a lot of fasteners and various hardware from Fastenal , pretty sure they are based in the US as well !
Even better if you open an account with them , prices are way cheaper than the advertised retail cost ...

Thus my search for a different source

Available in larger quantities (250+) and only stainless steel, which is too soft.

Also only in stainless

Tried them. No luck there either.

Glenn,

Post a picture of what you're looking for ... somebody might have a lead, it's always better if there's a visual !

Cheers

Glenn, I assume you mean the washer is pre-installed on the bolt and won't fall off? I admit I haven't thought about this much (or any) but I would assume this is an artifact of assembly line work, where the guys can't be bothered with dabbing the washer with some grease or whatnot to keep it from falling off. The bolts in the cam tower come to mind.

Not to hijack your thread but the video over on the main Rennlist page of the assembly line for the new Taycan is downright spooky. It would appear that the entire car can be built with about 15 people, none of them over the age of 30, and half of them inspectors!

Back to your thread: I buy metric yellow zinc fasteners from McMaster.com. I looked. They don't seem to have anything like what you are looking for. Yes, they are most likely Chinese so I try and use them for parts that I can afford to have fall off!

What are these for? Traditionally, captured-washer fasteners are only used in light duty applications.

If it’s this type you are after then Paulin in Canada manufactures a range available in smaller quantities, they have US distributors listed on their website but I don’t think they sell online.

What is the advantage over a bolt with captive washer vs a Metric Flange bolt?
This is a Metric Flange Bolt:

This one is called a Hex Head Screw with Captivated Washer or a Body Bolt with Washer (That's what Belmetric calls it): [A4524YLW - BMW / Porsche Body Bolt with Washer]

Edit: WOW... Check this out:
M6x1.00x16 Metric Original BMW / Porsche Hex Head Screw with Captivated Washer (Yellow Zinc Plated / Class 8.8) is $3.62 each.
M6x1.00x16 Metric Flange Bolt (Yellow Zinc Plated / Class 10.9) is $0.22 each.

Same bolt size, one has a washer, one has a flange.

I don't know what size you're looking for but I'm having luck searching "metric body bolts yellow zinc" and "metric SEMS body bolts" in the browser. I found one supplier that had M6x1.00 X 16mm Zinc Body Bolts Qty 50 for $9.99, works out to about $0.20 each.

Knowing what the heck an industry labels something is 90% of the battle when sourcing components or parts for anything.
