Default 1983 944 with Automatic Transmission

Hey everyone, new member and first post. Recently picked up a 2 owner 1983 944 to restore with my daughter. It was in storage for the last decade and the Berber tweed interior is perfect - even has tool kit and compressor.

It does leak ATF, first thought was to replace axle seals since I’m rebuilding the axles anyways. No luck, still leaking. Anyways before I pull the tranny was curious if anyone knows about the automatics. The shop manual section on automatics simply states to take them to a professional...what fun is that?

I could send a video of what’s happening if anyone has had a similar issue.

Appreciate it!

The fluid spits out and flows down to the ground.

Automatics are a mystery to me.

Congrats on your project - I hope it brings your daughter and you many miles of smiles.

What does the fluid smell and look like? If it smells like burned coffee and is about the same color, expect the clutches and steels to be cooked. Does it shift at all? Fluid drain and replacement would be the first on the list. If a filter can be replace w/o trans removal, do that too.. Pulling the trans would be the last step, if necessary. I think that the WSM has a lot on this unit..Google or obtain the DVD version. It will help a lot. Otherwise, you need to take it to a pro shop to get the unit disassembled, and the case and valve body thouroughly put through a hot parts cleaner machine, prior to reassembly. There may be a rebuild kit available from Porsche, with all the gaskets, seals, clutches and steels. If you have all the parts for the rebuild, prior to going to a pro shop, you can. perhaps, save yourself some $$ there. Hope this helps some..and good luck..

Congrats!

I have no experience with auto 944s but I do have a little experience with them in my Benzes. They are a little different than manuals as far as their outside profile. Things like input shaft seals and axle flange seals will be similar to a manual. But there are also covers for hydraulic pistons and if those are leaking you can remove the cover and re-seal it - I don't know with what - maybe silicone or a new gasket.

Look for obvious things first though: drain/fill plugs, shifter linkage, sensors, etc.

Good luck and have fun!
