Default Cracked windshield tears :(

Yes, I'm an idiot and cracked my windshield while replacing the wiper blades...after having this car for less than 48 hrs.

That's not a reflection you see in the windshield, it's my tears Oh well, live and learn...

I must say, as an engineer, that's quite the ****ty design to have metal with a spring on it (the wiper arm) able to smash right into the glass like that.

Since I'm here, anyone think this is fixable? Or new windshield needed?

Sorry to see that is your first repair experience with the car. FYI, that style arm was used on pretty much everything made 1960-1990 before the blade arms and proprietary fastening designs came out. Old rule at Advance Auto Parts (I was a general manager many years ago) was to not leave them in the open position unless you were holding the arm. My store had a moving blanket we sent out with the team member when replacing them in the lot.

I'd call Safelite and have it injected. If it doesn't work, you'll need a replacement. In my area (Kansas City) Sekurit glass installed is $770. Other vendors might have different suppliers.

Thanks Perry! Yeah, I started remembering that most old cars were like that....it's still a crappy design and I suspect they did it on purpose so people would crack their windshields...

I actually *was* holding it, but sure enough, it had enough spring force to slip out of my hand. I should have put that blanket down on the windshield in hindsight.

I checked with a company who fills them and he said it's not possible to repair because it already started spreading, so I got quote to have new glass installed Thursday for $400 CDN...not as bad as I thought.

Just need something to fix the bruised ego now

I worked at an auto parts store for many years and would always cringe when I'd see customers out in front of the store with their wiper arms up like that. I cautioned a good many of them, but of course I only interacted with so many people there. Every winter there were at least a couple people that cracked their windshield like that.

Where did you get a $400 quote? I was looking a few months back and couldn't get close to that. Was either >$600 or just "Can't get one"

You got a great deal for $400.00 !
I've already had two windshields replaced on the race car , i have a guy who comes over and replaces them in my garage
for $350. cash , so your $400 is very decent.

Cheers
Phil

A company called Swift Auto Glass in Toronto. They have good reviews. It's not OEM glass. I'll post back after the replacement on Thursday...

Not to worry ... it's pretty straightforward for anybody who's done 944 windshields ... my 89 911 on the other hand , that's a whole different story with the seal and all !
The 911 is almost triple the price.

Cheers
Phil

I don't that is fixable with some resin. Even for much smaller crack repairs I find that a) it is still pretty visable and b) it washes out over time. At best it stops further cracking of small cranks which is why most insurance companies cover the repair without any deductible.

Windshield replaced - woohoo! All went well, so if anyone in the Toronto area needs it done, PM me and I'll send the info. It wasn't original glass, but looks pretty good. Here she is all clean and shiny now

Indeed it is. The wheels fill the arches really nicely. What rubber and wheels are you running? Does it have spacers on the backs?
