Compact Subwoofer?
I was wondering if there is such a thing--a subwoofer that is reasonably small, that actually works? Those Bazooka tubes are too big, and need to take up most of the hatch to work right.
Any ideas? I need a bit more bass--but not the "thump" of a huge enclosure.

I am a electric bass player and a electronic technician, as a bass player many cabinets use tens and even eight's. Heck one of most famous and popular bass setups that is still in use today by many musicians is an Ampeg rig that runs eight ten inch speakers.
As a technician I have read many studies and projects that prove you don't need anything more than a ten inch speaker to reproduce LOUD clean bass. The popularity of twelve and fifteen inch speakers is because of the uneducated bigger is better mentality.
Many people have got good results cutting six by nines into the two cubby holes in the back hatch area.

I like the cubby hole KLA enclosure, but I would have to get a seperate 100W amp. I'd rather just use my Blau Toronto's power...maybe that Infinity self-powered unit would be cool. But where to mount?

I see those self-powered Infinity units on ebay for as cheap as $165! Anyone know if putting one in the hatch, against the back of the rear seat would work?
I would guess the KLA version would be way more if it was self powered.

Kenwood makes a _very_ small powered sub called the wOOx. They go for ~$130 on ebay. It even has a remote that comes up so you can play with the crossover point and sub volume. I have yet to plug mine in, but it came recommended from another Porschefile. Take a look for them.

That Kenwood unit has a 5.25" speaker...seems way too small to get any bass frequencies (the 10" speaker in the Infinity goes down to 20hz).

many of my friends have tried to pump bass out of all sorts of 6x9" and 8" combinations, and none were successful. we found the most space effective way to make good, clean bass was with a 10' sub designed for small enclosures.
pioneer premier TS-W1041C ten inch subs can be had for under $100 and they handle up to 800 watts max. they're designed for a .6 cubic ft enclose. most other 10"s require .75 and up. i've got two of these subs lying around that were only run for a couple months. i'll let them go for $40 each plus shipping.
for a good cost effective amp, check out the JBL power series BP300.1 ($180 online) to run one ten inch subwoofer. we've run all kinds of crazy ohm loads on those JBL power series amps, and never once encountered a problem. the number "300" refers to RMS power with is max power divided by the square root of 2 (approximately 1.414). so the BP300.1 gives you about 424 max watts, more than enough to make the 10" premier sound great.
regarding the infinity self-enclosed setup . . . it's really not bad for the price, but the bass is way too bright for my taste. i've yet to hear any self-enclosed system that compares to a convential component 10". of course, i save a lot of money by installing and building the sub enclosure myself.

Maybe I'm getting too old or something, maybe I don't get it, but I absolutely can't tolerate that mind numbing sub-bass that shakes the windows, makes the hatch rattle, and generally disconnects me from the road. Don't get me wrong, I love good bass, listen to all forms of blues, rock, alt, and jazz. It's just the sub-50 punch of a really clean sub(s) doesn't really represent any instrument I remember from back in the day. I have a small 8"- Eclipse sub, non-ported, and I have it set for very clean bass/mid-bass that fits the type of music I listen too. I love music, always have, I play it loud, I sing loud in the car (when no one's watching). Just a rhetorical question here, I'm not judging anyone's taste or desires, but why do you some people never know when to stop when it comes to loudness and the "can you hear me now? factor. Sorry, I just had to rant. I back up to a major road and we are constantly assaulted by subs that easily shake our 2-story house from 90 feet away.

I'm with you 2Tight. I just want to add a nice low-end to an otherwise bass-less 4x6 setup! Nothing annoys me more than window shaking bass. I just want to hear my Van Halen the way it was meant to be heard--with Michael Anthony's bass line thumping behind Ed's blazing guitar! Right now, my stereo sounds like an AM radio!
I am probably gonna buy the Infinity unit on ebay for under $200. I'll have someone who knows what to do run a wire from the battery (through the firewall?) to power the sucker. Not sure where it will go...I am guessing against the back of the rear passenger seatback, bolted to the hatch floor?

Yes, I can fill your need. Your reasons are exactly why I built the KLA cubby sub. Don't limit yourself to one driver/amp combo with an all-in-one(not saying they're bad, just not upgradeable). Give me a call and we'll talk about it.
