Default Filling transaxle...

I just did a gear oil change this past Saturday, and am looking for some post-procedure pointers. No, I didn't strip the fill or drain plug, and I used the LSD -correct fluid, but I have to say that filling it was a PITA. I had the larger bottles of Redline, and no vacum pump--I tried every which way of getting that oil in there, funnels, no funnels, various contorsionist positions, and still manged to spill about half a bottle when it was all said and done. I eventually got it filled by crafting a small aluminum-foil funnel, whcih I was able to fit into the fill hole, while dumping oil into it from the back of the car. I still amaged to get some down my arm and into my armpit--niiice feeling. So, short of a vaum pump--any suggestions?

Mityvac is the best I've used. There are some cheaper units at Walmart and local parts stores - a friend tried two of them and both failed - then, used my Mityvac hand pump. Much betta'!

I'll prove to you that you learned something useful in college:

Take a 5-6 ft piece of clear vinyl tubing and stick a funnel in one end. But instead of putting the other end into your mouth and emptying a beer into it, stick the tubing into the fill hole, then stand casually next to the car and start pouring gear oil into the funnel. Optionally, chant "Chug! Chug! Chug!"

Works like a charm.

I also use that technique to fill mine. I routed the tubing out the wheel well. You will need two people to make sure you don't pull the tubing out from the fill plug and dump all over the floor...

A bunch of guys here talk about a cheapo little pump from the auto-part store, I haven't seen it though.
I got tired of waiting 1/2 hour for gravity to do its job (and the mess) so I bought a hand pump that goes on a 5 gallon pail. It works really great. 5 gallon pails of oil are about the same cost as 7 or 8 quart bottles, -if the oil is available in pails. I'm using 76 gear oil, its good (but not fancy, it used to be marketed as their NASCAR gear oil) and costs about $40 for 5 gallons. I had the option of buying SWEPCO bulk (about $40 a gallon IIRC), and I probably should have, but I think the 76 is just fine.
here's the pump link

I am an idiot....The funnel/tuubing idea is excellent(as are the others) but I had a funnel, tubing, duct tape, in the garage--never put 2 and 2 together. Sitting here is hindsight, I also had a turkey baster I could have used.....Duh...Oh, well live and learn(and get gear oil in your armpit)MMm smells great.

Use tubing with the same OD as regular garden hose... Or use clean garden hose like I did.

Also boil up a big *** pot of water and put the bottles of fluid in that, the fluid goes in like melted butter when its nice and hot like that. Otherwise its like cold molassis.

Good one, theedge. My Dad got me in the habit of heating oils before pouring - I just sit them in front of a ceramic heater for a half hour before pouring.

I got a pump made to fill transmissions at the local NAPA store. Its like a large syringe with a 1 foot hose. Stick in the bottle, pull back the plunger. Put the tube in the fill hole, push in the plunger. Transfers about a pint at a time. IIRC it costs less than $15. Let me know if you need details.

I keep old Swepco gear oil bottles around no mater what gear oil I use.......they come with a pull out fill tube, pretty nifty!
