Default Variocam for S2

Has anyone ever converted a 944S2 to variocam? Can you install the 968 cam chain tensioner in S2 head or just the whole 968 head on the S2 block and add the variocam module with some wiring mods?

The 968 Variocam tensioner is a totally different design than the one in the S2, so you would need to swap the head, complete with cams, and then find a way to control the Variocam since that's all done by the 968 DME. What you describe would be hideously expensive. If you want more power in an S2 there are no easy solutions. That said, I do have a couple of mods in my S2, a DME chip and a Cargraphic exhaust system with 100 cell high flow cat. It sounds great, and runs great, but it still has less power (and much less torque) than my stock-ish '89 Turbo.

Put some better cams in the S2 motor and it should yield a reasonable gain. The S2 cams are worse than the 944 S 16v cams.

It's more of a curiosity question than anything else. I agree you would need the 968 head but I think you could run any cams. The variocam tensioner just has plastic guides similar to the S2 tensioner and shouldn't care how many teeth on the cams. Any reason you can't run 19 tooth cams on the 968 variocam tensioner? Maybe the 18-tooth and 19-tooth chains are different lengths?

I'm well down the road on this current and it has been hideously expensive so far. The pistons should be coming in the next couple of weeks. Yes, it's getting big cams and big valves and a big crank. Should be fun if I ever finish it. If I had a do-over, I would have just refreshed the head, swapped cams, and new exhaust.
