This weekend i looked at Paul C's 1985.5 944 and noticed my afm had a different part number than his.. to further my qualms about what year parts ihave in my car.
Just went out and dug down to my dme, got a pic of the numbers on it, and same with the AFM. can someone tell me if i have mismatched units, and if not, which years my parts are from? I am trying to track down what is up with my running problem with an 83/84 engine in a late car. thanks. last number is 106 on the top row of numbers there, if you cant read it. Any help would be appreciated,,, thanks.

i was just searchin around, with the part numbers.. found the afm at a site.. i know these porsche and vw parts are often common,,, but is this right? my afm says it is found on
Golf/Jetta GTi 1.8 litre Passat 2.0 litre and now i found it can also be found on Seat Toledo 2 litre can that be right? grr.... Wtf, now i searched the dme number, and found 924 S 2.5 L at atpelectronics... whats goin on here but i also found in some other mailing list through google that someone was sayingi an 87 944 8v had this part number for the DME, so maybe thats right.. so confused. someone answer before i go even further into this, whcih i know nothing about and am just rambling.

Didn't you just ask this a couple days ago? I told you then that was a VW afm.
It's the same dme for the 85.5 - 87 944 and the '87 924S. That afm came from a VW, probably a Golf or Jetta. That might be part of your problem along with the funky fuel line. Obviously it works, it just doesn't work perfect. Ideally you should look for someone with a parts car and get everything that is "right". |

so the DME is the right one for a late car, but it's a faked afm huh? thats awfully strange.
ok.. ill look into it. yeah i posted a few days ago, but somone, maybe you, said that i needed to check the number again, because you thought it was wrong or something. the only response that i saw that i got was saying it didn't even come up as an AFM i think. but maybe i'm wrong. thanks for the help. if anyone else knows, or has a late afm, let me know.

Not sure of part numbers... but
early AFM only works with early DME late AFM only works with late DME. The major difference is a different output voltage from the two AFM's. early AFM/DME work on early or late engines Late AFM/DME work on early or late engines. You cannot mix early/late AFM & DME however. |

ok here's the deal here. my '84 has a DME AFM conversion to an '86. the AFM number on that car is 0 280 202 064, and the DME number is 944.618.121.04. every number on your DME matches the ones on mine. early computer numbers are 944.618.111.01, and AFM 0 280 202 028.
you need a late AFM, i suggest you get it from shutemup, and i'll figure out who to send the extra early one i have between him and Scott. -Mike- |

M758 - in my experience the early afm/dme do not work on a late car.

I ran my early DME/AFM on my race car just fine. It had an 84 block, but the late head, cam and injection. Worked fine, but the car seemed a bit sluggish compared to my chipped 87 late DME/AFM. Maybe down 2-3 hp. I swapped since I was having some problems that I traced to bad wiper tracks on my late AFM. I fixed those and went back to the late stuff.

well thats still an early computer and airflow meter in an early car. just because the motor parts are late doesn't make it a late motor. the cam as you have said has a bit longer exhaust duration, so that probably made it a bit more sluggish since the computer wasn't compensating for that. i put an early computer and airflow meter in a late car (which actually has an '84 motor in it) and it didn't work well at all. it barely ran. so he needs a late AFM. the late electronics will not allow for the use of an early computer and airflow meter. funny, the opposite works... although i'm planning on switching that back out and putting the late computer in the track car, as well as the late cam for the few extra ponies, oh and the updated exhaust manifolds as well... saving around #20 a piece is ok with me!

Mike,
This entire early vs late thing is a little odd. Sure I have an early chassis, but for a long time I ran a complete 87 motor in the car using late AFM/DME & fuel injection. This was in the 84 chassis, but everthing else was really "late" Now I run all same parts except the block is from an 84. When I swapped early AFM/DME they also worked. Note that the DME harness is from an 87 924S too. So that is why I know you can run all kinds of combos of parts. It is funny my 84 944 is less a 84 944 and more like an 87 924S with 944 fenders and an 84 block.

dang, what a jumble!
as far as i know, the wiring on the 924S is the same as early 944, so basically you're using the early 944 connections. you shouldn't have the late ISV on that motor, or anything else. i don't know if they changed the temp sensor for the 924S, but that is quite a curious situation! -Mike- |

The 924S motor has the late ISV. No issue with temp sensor however.

83/84/85 944NA DME part numbers
944.618.111.00 944.618.111.01 944.618.111.02 944.618.111.03 1986 944S DME part numbers Model 944.618.121.03 M44.05/06 944.618.121.04 M44.07/08 944.618.121.05 M44.09/10 944.618.121.01 M44.40 944.618.121.08 M44.50/51 944.618.121.10 M44.52 Now my question is; Would a chip out of a 944.618.121.04 DME work/improve or hurt preformance of an 84NA? Michael (and yes my 84 DME does have an custom prom in it) |
