Default new CV joints good......or

Hi everyone,

I bought 4 new CV joints for the race car. This is after running joints worn out beyond belief, mixing and matching *****, cages and races from a bunch of joints. I've actually only broke two, the last one was at the 59 minute mark in a 1 hour endure, from the lead in GT-3. Ya... time for new CV's.
So, I bought 4 EMPI (98-5094-B) CV (.75" *****), and much to my surprise, they are made in CHINA!!! I didn't expect this. Should I be worried??

Thanks as always, 38 days to the first race!

Gord.

I bet you they'll work, just not as long or as well as the original ones. We should all be worried. Sadly, many replacement parts are a downgrade from the genuine ones from the original era. Getting your old part to work is often way better than buying a new aftermarket one, whenever practical. This is the world we live in!

How the hell do you test your race car before race day?

I have heard mixed reviews on Empi joints, especially from VW guys. It’s probably fine for a street car with LSD. But why risk it? GKN joints aren’t that expensive for a race car. You can get the Vanagon / T2 parts for under $100 each. They have a lower articulation angle than stock, but have beefier cages.

THAT is always a problem!
I was able to get plates for mine, but I still dread passing a cop.
Good luck with the axles, let us know how they hold up.

I remember testing my Formula Ford in our neighbourhood in San Jose after an engine rebuild. I don't imagine a cop would have been too impressed....

GKN Lobro is the only quality option. Everything else is a lesson waiting to be learned the hard way.

We have a rebuilder in north Georgia I just called him last week about getting mine rebuilt. He said let him rebuild mine and do not order a set and send mine for cores. He says that the West German steel was so much better than what he sees today it is worth the wait on turnaround time. Try DC Automotive and see if you can get a original set to be overhauled.
