Default Tach bounce

Hey guys, I replaced a regency sensor on an 86 Turbo as part of remedying a no start situation. Once installation was complete, I cranked and checked for “tach bounce”. Yep- got tach bounce all right- it swings wildly up to about 3 k when cranking. Is that god/bad/not really an issue? ( also car won’t start, but that is part of a more extensive troubleshoot).

Not normal to bounce that much. It should only bounce a couple hundred rpm.

Could be an issue with the tach and unrelated to your no-start though

Start with checking for lack of fuel or lack of spark and go from there. As you know the engine troubleshooting guide on clarks has a very in-depth, step by step guide on diagnosing a no start condition, so recommend following that closely.

Thanks Wally. What I was hoping to hear was that it was related to the gap distance- maybe I have installed too close to the flywheel….

If the wiring is reversed I think you get a crazy signal? Or from electrical noise from the starter brushes, exacerbated by a cut bellhousing.
