Arrow S motor swap update.

I recieved the engine in 8 boxes yesterday. Hauled them over to the shop and started tearing them open. Seeing it all in front of me made me excited to do what it takes and follow through with this project. My mechanic and I made a deal yesterday also. Because he does not have enough man power to complete my motor and finish my car in the time desired, I am going to be working/learning there about 4 or 5 days a week starting tomorrow until my car is done. So, because my labor will be taking a load off the shop, my mechanic (now my boss) will charge me less than half of what it would cost for labor, and plus aid me in doing the research and custom work for coupling the motor to the automatic driveline. He has good relationships with local machine shops. Plus, working under him may leave a nice opportunity for future employment.

The motor looks superb and the seller included the much needed ignition and bellhousing. So i'll get my hands on it tomorrow.

wow, not only are you getting over 1/2 off, but your getting the knowledge and experience that is worth that 1/2 off many times over if you keep the 951(S) for a while. Next you could put a 968 six speed in there! Good luck and enjoy, I think I would even pay to do what you're doing--and on someone else's car!! Keep us updated.

Dlefko - sweet!! i almost bought that motor from URIN2ND, but decided to keep what i have and rebuild it. mine is at the machine shop and i'd like to follow your progress because i'll be just a few weeks behind you in progress. are you having to buy oversize bearings and so on?

also, i used a particular independent shop in houston to repair my 951 four years ago, and i'm interested which shop you are using? there is one in particular that i was less than impressed with.

anyway, good luck - i'll probably shoot you a PM and follow your progress.

Started cleaning pistons, head, and friends today. Im going to try to order new engine seals/gaskets, belts. rollers, and also new engine hardware today or tomorrow morning. Then when I recieve those items I can actually start putting the peices of the puzzle together. For now i'm just prepping, cleaning, making sure all engine components are true.
I've got some pics, i'll post em a bit later.

Excellent! She'll be back on the road in no time. The experience you will gain will be far in excess in lieu of pay you'll receive. Congrats Dave!

ok swap project is a no go.
Took a closer look at the head today to find a fat welded crack all the way down the side and a hole patched with JB weld further down. And two bolts on the side of the head are really bent, like its been dropped.

That is not cool, and I'm assuming this was a shock to you as well.

I'd say the seller has some explaining to do.

Oh, man.......that really sucks. and this was not disclosed before payment was made? i feel for you.

being that houston is a big city, you could probably find an aluminum welder to fix it, if it's repairable. what does your mechanic think? i had my aluminum head welded last year, so it may be that yours can be repaired. if not, i think the seller has some serious **** to deal with.

Check the 928 boards, head repair is fairly common IIRC from a post lastyear about welding aluminum

Did the seller say all parts were in good condition? If he did, get your money back from him.

I bought a used S head several years ago, but only handed money over after my mechanic had inspected it and given the thumbs up.

I don't think I've ever seen an engine basket case where all the parts were present and in good condition. And I mean ever.

No way im taking all the effort in this project to make the swap work if the head is crap.

this can't be a porsche rebuild.
