Angry Cat material harder than a rock !!!!

Well, I've just been bangling away at the chunk of honeycomb crap in my Cat..

I've used a metal tip broomhandle, a pointed golf club shaft. It barely even breaks off dust

If I could just break it in 2, it would fly out when I hook up the manifold again.

I think I'll go to HomeDepot and get a big piece of rebar or something and bang the bejessus out of it.

The chunk is about the size of a fist and is loose, causing blockage of the exhaust.
I have no way of cutting the section off, so I have to get to it from the rear flange as the PO welded the cat from the front eliminating the flange .

Rant Over .

In metals class I was helping some people gut their cats. That stuff is tough. We used rebar and a bigass hammer. It eventually broke through.

with that blocking part of your exhaust, how is the car acting. I'm starting to think mine is dead because the car seems to stutter when you're on the gas. Is this how yours is now? What exactly tipped you off that yours was dead?

With the title of your post, I thought this was going to be about hairballs or litter box material.

Yep, thats how mine was acting. Once it was able to flip sideways, it was like a bannana in the tailpipe ( a.la. Beverly Hills Cop )...

I went and got some 4 foot rebar. If I can knock it down a bit, it will shoot out like a spitwad..

does anyone know if there is honeycomb material in front of the screen on the cat ?

The screen looks intact, and I couldn't punch through it either. Should I just worry about the big rock, or should I gut the whole thing ??

BTW, here's the pic from the other post before

Are you just gutting the cat?

as larry the cable guy would say

'gutter done' or something like that

-Mike-

p.s. a gutted cat resonates a bit. some suggest ramming a straight pipe inside to eliminate the cat section while keeping the look of the cat stock.

What worked for me was a length of 1 inch diameter pipe. Ram that home, with the cat in a vise, or under some heavy object, then clean the pipe out with a piece of rebar. After most of the cat material is out, you will need to fashion a hook to fish out a wad of what looked like really heavy gauge steel wool and any other chunks of the cat materials. Be careful pounding on the exhaust because you can crack the welds, as I found out after I had the exhaust back on the car. Good luck and have fun.

A long crowbar has enough mass and length to reach and break the honeycomb stuff apart.

I was just going to say cut the cat out and weld in a straight pipe, why mess with gutting it? I've heard that the resonance inside the gutted cat doesn't sound that good.

based on my experience, i agree with pearldrum. just cut out the damn cat and weld in a straight pipe.

i had mine completely gutted but it took some time and trial and error to completely gut it, and even afterward it seemed to rattle or resonate.

I recommended a long floor jack handle because it is readily available and works very well.

Would it be possible to run the straight pipe and then tack-weld or otherwise secure the "shell" of the cat around it to give it that "emissions compliant" look from the outside? I'm not advocating this because I kind of like to do my part for cleaner air, but if someone is hell-bent on more performance and doesn't care about poisoning the rest of us, that's probably a way you could do it and get away with it.

Yes, I have heard of some people doing this.

A concrete drill is carbide tipped and cheap. plus you won't be banging on all the welds..
