Default Sport Compacts Top 100 Cars-Good Laugh

Funny that out of the top 100 sport compacts of all time not a single 944 or 951 made the list. Our cars are not worthy! You should really check out some of the cars that were picked. No wonder I stopped reading that mag 3 years ago, what a waste of good trees.

All I know is that Top Gear rated the 944 Turbo the 36th best car of all time! I deifintely trust Top Gear more than Sports Compact Car or whatever it is.

Maybe they consider it a real sports car, and not a compact car?

Tiff also said that the 944 Turbo was his favorite car of the 80s.

As Red1 said, a 944 isn't a sport compact. But does anyone really need a magazine to validate their choice of car?

The Miata and RX-7, are both there and they are true sports cars. There are many Euros like Golfs, BMW's, Alfas...but not a single Porsche. To say that SCC has always had an Asian slant is putting it mildly.

I certainly don't need a magazine for validation, you can't drive a magazine. It's just hard to believe the model was never mentioned but then again we must be very low on their Bling Radar. Guess I'll have to dump the Turbo and trade up to a Civic to get real performance.

Exactly Marc. They clearly and legitimately speak to an entirely different group of enthusiasts. The fact that there is a limited commecial interest in 924/44/51/68 performance should speak volumes in this regard. And honestly, when you get right down to it in very general terms (forgive me) the origins of this series is basically a tarted up Golf. All other Porsches are just in a different catagory, they just are not "sport compact" cars.

Mike, you have completely missed the point. The Civic could actually hold the number 1 spot. It has pretty much been the singular focal point of the origins of the current compact "tuner" craze. The GTI came close several years before, but not nearly the way the Civic has inspired so many car crazed youth.

Who ever thought that the modern hallmark of mundane utilitarian transportation in this country, the econobox by which other econoboxes are judged, would become an object of passion and looked upon as a sport/performance car! What a boring generation they must be...

Yeah, but like we were discussing in that other thread, it isn't a new phenomena. Was the Mustang a hot **** car out of the gate? Nope, it was a secretaries cars (that is how it was marketed) until Carrol Shelby got hold of it. How about the Mini (John Cooper) or the Ford Cortina (Colin Chapman/Lotus) or Escort (Cosworth). Or for that matter the 32 Ford Coupe and flathead V8 (hot rodders after WW2). Or maybe the Datsun 510. How about all the hopped up VW Beetles back in the 70s. You couldn't swing a cat when I was growing up in South Florida without hitting a sand rail or Beetle dune buggy.

Basically, you have to work with what you got. In a way I wish the craze hadn't happened the way it has, because it sure is funny to watch the look of shock on somebodies face when they get spanked by a really fast stock looking Civic sleeper.
