Default Shocks and Struts Question

I have an 84 944 and an 86.

The 84 just got totalled by the insurance company, though it is not so bad, and I will fix it eventually. I just put Konis on it all the way around last summer. The 86 needs shocks badly. I kow the iserts for the front are the same, so these are my questions:

Are the front housings the same? Can I just swap them or do I need to disassemble them to swap.

What is different about the rear shocks in these two years. They are listed as different part but I don't have any reference material that illustrates the difference.

Normally i wouldn't be this cheap, but it has been a very tough year. LOL(nervously).

Thanks all.

With the rears, I believe the mounting eylet on the later cars is not as wide. Or it might be a slightly larger diameter - I don't quite remember.

According to my Koni catalog the fronts are the same for the two years you site. The rears are different part numbers. I do not know what the physical differences are.

P/N for rear Koni shocks for 83-85 944: 26-1209 or 26-1209 Sport

Call Lee Grimes at Koni in Kentucky and see if he'll give you a good price. Tell him Scott Harvey sent you. After he asks, "who"? hang up...

Seriously, last time I called it was (606) 586-4100 x16

(ask him how his supply of Talon shocks are doing - my 210,000 mile ride might be due for some replacements soon )

The lower mounts on the 86 are larger. The 84 shocks will not fit.

The 86 may not have housings that can be easily disassembled. Look at the top of the strut housing for the threads for the screw-on cap. I modified an early set to fit my 87. It was not a bolt on deal.
Paragon has some sort of program to rebuild the newer style housings with Koni's. You may want to check with them. I think cars that came with Koni's had the rebuildable housings on the later years.

You can just swap the complete front struts. The rear shocks won't work. The rear 26-1209 Sport unit you had on the 84 uses a 12mm lower mounting bolt and the 86 will use a 14mm bolt. Even with a BFH that won't work.

If the bolt holes don't line up on the front, you might have to notch the lower holes to make them fit. I just converted from 86 sealed struts with farther apart holes, to 83 with removable inserts. I had to notch the lower holes, then they slide into place.
