Default 968 Mirrors Help!!

Ok.. so I am installing a pair of 968 mirrors on my 89 951 and the information listed at http://www.951motorsports.com says to connect 6 wires. However, the Power Mirror mechanism I order from Sun Coast has 10 wires?

The above website does not mention anything about the other 4 wires coming from the power mirror mechansim - yellow, gray, green or pink????

Surely someone has run into this issue?

Thanks
David

There are only 6 wires that come from the mirror/motor assembley. If you install the outside temp sensor in your mirror houseing, it only adds 2 more wires. I have no idea where the other 2 wires you are talking about are coming from.

Code:
Aero Mirror Driver Side Wiring Harness Passenger Side Wiring Harness

Male .093 Pins Female .093 Connectors Female .093 Connectors

1) BLACK 1) WHITE / BROWN STRIPE 1) BLACK

2) RED 2) BLACK / BROWN STRIPE 2) BLACK / BROWN STRIPE

3) BLUE 3) WHITE / BROWN STRIPE 3) WHITE / BROWN STRIPE

4) WHITE 4) WHITE 4) WHITE

5) BROWN 5) BROWN 5) BROWN

6) BROWN 6) BROWN / YELLOW STRIPE 6) BROWN / YELLOW STRIPE
Both the 86 951 mirror motors I had previously, and the 968 motors I got from sunset imports, had 6 wires. 4 to move the mirrors up/down/left/right and 1 ground and 1 for the defroster. The wires coming from my new motors were TOTALLY different colours from the old wires. If you install the outside temp sensor (2 purple wires) that's another 2 wires that have to go thru the middle of the socket. (because the socket should be a 6 pole socket..)

What is the part number on your mirror motors? Maybe you can experiment and make them work with only 6 wires being used.

Yeah. they sent you the 928 mirror motor. The Aero mirrors were designed for the 965 and have all 965 part numbers. (except parts that are unique to each car.. like the base on the 968 mirrors has a 944.xxx part number)

The PET shows all the parts for the aero mirrors on the 968 having ALL 965 parts numbers. (which is what sunset imports sent me)

I think you can still make it work though, you just have to experiment with the wires to make it work properly. the worst thing that can happen is a blown fuse.

I would send them back and ask for 965 mirrors in exchange.

Thanks Rich.

Sunset has shipped enough of these kits to know better than supply the 928 mirror. I did try and connect the mirror using your chart but no go? I call sunset on Monday - this is a major bummer. Anyone else had a similiar experience with this kit?

Thanks

Rich is correct - those are 928 mirror motors. Not sure what the extra wires go to.

Considering its a 928 part number......... not surprised it has more wires.

Yup.... and the one sitting on my desk is a 965 part number.

DLR how did you find putting the big bolt with the spring on? any tips. I have rigged the setup listed on that how-to site...... but havent got around to doing it.....

If I had to guess, I bet the extra wires you have on the 928 motors are part of the seat/mirror memory function.

Quick question. The pair of white/brown stripe wires on my drivers side were twisted together, along with the blue/black ones on the 968 harness (my 968 mirrors/motor wiring came "snipped" off another 944, used). I'm assuming these are both just grounds, but will I be ok if I solder each pair individually instead of keeping all 4 wires at a common junction? It would let me make a cleaner install, and I don't have bigger diameter shrink wrap.

Lest we forget that the 928 GTS used the same aero mirrors and the motors are no different in function as the 965's, and the extra wires are as Glenn mentions... memory control.

I'm pretty sure you could just pull the motors from the old mirrors & hook them back up inside the 968 mirrors.... I had always sort of wished I had saved the $50 or so & bought the manual 968 retro-fit kit instead of electric ones & tried using mine, but, didn't know it was possible at the time, until I bought the new mirrors- well, still not entirely sure it's possible... Either way, Keith Fosters how-to site should help you line up the right wire to the right wire, unless there are duplicate colors, OR, if the 928 used dif colors...?

http://www.951motorsports.com/

EDIT: whoops.... sorry... didn't realize that was the same how-to you were already using... Do the 928 & 968 colors not match up the same, or, were just worried about having the extra wires there?

get a big allen wrench, and hold the mirror in one hand up against your leg, and push really hard while twisting to get the threads started. i was trying to find a better way, but thats how i did all of mine, and it worked

The 951 Flag motors will work in the 968 housing. There is a slight difference in the mounting plate on the back of the motor that makes the 951 motors "rock" when installed. To correct you need to modify the mounting points. I did this on one set, but it's been several years and I can't recall exactly what I did. But it was fairly simple and the "fix" was obvious once you are in there. I'm thinking I added washers to the back - but don't quote me on that. Like I said - it's been a while....

I'm quite good with a soldering gun, having spent many a year racing and building slot cars. I tried to solder the wires on mine and found that it was next to impossible to get a good flow before the wires melted. This is why I suggest crimping the wires in the article. Having said that, there have been several improvements in solder gun technology in the last few years, so one of the new cold solder guns "might" work. If you try this let us know how it works out.
