Default Transaxle Question

Does this transaxle look like it's from an 87 to you? It has the old style side mounts that keep a later turbo trans from working in an early car. Were the 951 trans the only ones with a single mount. Changing the fluid every 3000 miles seems a bit fishey also. I would be real surprised to find an 83-85 with only 37K miles on it. Any one agree!

Just ask the seller for the code from the tranny. He almost has a picture of it . Its located at the top of the opening for the torque tube (where the green paint smudge is) , that will tell you everything about the year and type of tranny. This came up in a thread a few days back.

If I'm not mistaken, a 924S tranny mounts different than the 944 of the same year which leads me to believe this is a 924S tranny.

It's definitely an late 85 or later as it has the electronic speedometer pick-up.

924S has the front wheel drive mechanical speedo wire, and the trans mounts exactly as the early 944.

924 is compatable with either mount type. as far as my research showed anyway.

924S tranny at least in 87, was essentially the same transmission as 85.5+ transmissions, with the speedometer sensor port there, but the sensor missing. I believe they were compatable with two different moutns.

The transaxle I put in about a year ago only had about 50k on it and it was from an 84. I took it out of the car, and I believe they were actual miles after looking at the rest of the car. So 37k isn't that hard to believe, but still there can't be many. My original had about 135k on it when the pinion broke. I'm glad I didn't spend the money for a r&p. The low mileage transaxle has a much tighter gearbox. I never realized how loose mine was until I had a better one.

I've already asked the seller that question b/c I'm considering this as well -- I see this is getting to be a bidding war....

The dual mounts look like early tranny mounts mated to a late tranny (note the speedo connections). But the tranny mounts are attached to the side covers -- which was not how I found my 87 tranny attached. The seller said this is exactly how he found it on his 87 car. Seemed wrong to me....

Given how clean it looks, low mileage might be right (or it was just cleaned up recently).

No bidding war from me...I have an 86 Turbo T/A for sale and was just looking for comparable prices. I guess there are others here looking also?

Seems like it -- there has been a bunch of trannies going kabloom recently. Over the past one month, I can think of 4 guys -- Tifo, yieldsign, Dmitry and myself -- who ate (or about to eat) their tranny.

As another data point, I know of a guy in SoCal who's been trying to get rid of his 86 951 tranny with cooler for $500 with no takers (he hangs around on Pelican mostly).

If you've ever shipped a tranny I can't over emphasize the convenience of a local buyer who can just toss it in the back of a truck. I guess it's all a matter of who has what you need and if you trust the seller. Being without a tranny is serious business, they do seem hard to find. I hope I get more than $500 for mine knowing the history on the car and all. Good Luck I hope your search proves successful.

I blew the last one about 2 months back. Actually, my car is on it's 4TH TRANSAXLE, and it only has 83K on it.

Anyway, I have given up purchasing used transaxles of unknown quality. The miles that are listed for a used tranny do not tell you how it was driven/abused, and whether or not it was driven for a long time with the rubber clutch center blown (this is on an n/a, which seems to be detrimental to R&P lifespan).

I've got the last one torn apart on my bench at home and am working on rebuilding it properly with a new hardened R&P and synchros/bearings. If the budget allows, a GT LSD will be installed as well. Hope to have it done by spring, then will install and save the 88ROW trans that is in the car now as a back-up.

Cost for the project? Well, more than a used trans. If I don't buy the LSD pack, it looks like I will be looking at around $1100 to $1200 including the cost of the hardened R&P gears, synchros, bearings (sourced locally instead of from porsche), tools, hotplate, and press. This is a little more than twice the current money for a used n/a transaxle (can be had for around $500 or so). But I will know what I have and know that it will last more than 18 months (which seems to the average life of a trans in my car due to the strains of autocrossing). But, if you compare that to a "rebuilt" trans from places such as 944online, that cost $1550 exchange) that hasn't had a new R&P installed (just bearings, seals, and synchros) and it doesn't sound too bad to me.

Here's the deal though. Once I've finished this one, I'll have the tools and the know how to do another. So, that means that if any local guys kaboom theirs, I might be able to work out a deal with them to do the work if they buy the parts. Hopefully I can do a few and it can be a way of "paying it forward" for all the help I have received here in the past. (special thanks go to Scott at Team Harco for putting up with my million questions)

Tifo,
Have you ever done just the bearings, seals, and synchros without new hard parts? If so, is a standard bearing press all you need for this level of repair? Sounds like you could keep yourself pretty busy if you start making a hardened unit for all these dead T/A's lately.
