Default 944 Door handle failure?

Hey, I've heard of this happening on other 944 series cars and I was wondering what part typically breaks (the door handle moves, but it does not move anything or give any resistance...) any ideas? Also, anyone have any for sale? Both driver and passenger doors (yes, its a pita climbing through the hatch every time you wanna get in!)

Thanks!
Mike

My passenger side broke the same way, its just the linkage "arm" thing inside the door. Partswerks in Chicago sells just the arm for like 15 bucks but around here they do not come highly recommended! I found one on ebay and called them up and bought it - works great.

My paren'ts Toyota Cressida (circa 1991) has had the same problem twice. There was a small plastic piece that had broken off both times. Just be gentle with your door and you should be fine. Even though Dukes of Hazzard made jumping through the window look cool, it isn't nearly as easy as it looks.

Climbing through the hatch is poo, but it's the landing face first on your gravel driveway after completing the journey through your cab that really sucks.

As for the part, here it is from 944 Online...

It's a cheapy, but (for me at least) was a little frustrating to install. I just kept breaking stuff, but I was doing it all through the outer door hole, which is a pain.

They have updated their site. Great communication and fast shipment!

Pull your old door handle off the car first to see what is actually broken. On my car, part of the casting of the handle itself where the pivot pin goes through broke in half. I will need a replacement door handle.

Here's a good article on taking 944 door handles apart. Not hard, just tricky. You'll find some good references on this borad as well.

Good luck!

This is the most common failure of these handles. I've been through 3 handles in a year and it's always the pivot casting. I'm getting real good at swapping lock cylinders though. This failure still allows you to open the door from the inside though. If Mike has to climb in and out through the hatch this must not be his problem though.

Man, mine broke last night as I parked (from inside). Stupid pos, I'm reaching out the window and opening the door from outside.

The reason that these things fail is due to lack of lubrication. Use a good quality spray lithium grease and you will not have to be replacing them often.

I have a couple of early cars with the original door handles and they still work as nice as when they were new.

When mine broke, my power windows also didn't work, so it was in and out either the hatch or the passenger door.

FYI - I got my replacement handle from ^^^ George ^^^...thanks man.

Hmm, I suspect my passenger side door handle is going to fail soon; to open it from the outside I often have to manually move the little part under the handle that is supposed to spring out when you unlock the door. It is like the spring that is supposed to make that part come out when the door is unlocked is broken.

mine is messed up on the passenger side only, but mine is very very very rediculously amazingly hard to push the lever in, then you have to pull the door open. is this all part of the same problem? and.....944 ecology, what exactly are you lubing? taking the door panel off and lubing the linkage? or just spraying lube in the lock cylinder?
