I'll try the stethescope tomorrow. I've done that to figure out the ticking. The way it died on me, has trouble starting but will fire-up...sounds like a timing issue. Either a valve is messed up or the cam is off. I'll check cam gear mark with the flywheel mark as well.

I hope to god for you (and your bank account) that it's just a timing issue...

Brad-Cam had a similar sound on one of our Fun Runs last year. It sounded just like a forward lifter had collapsed to everyone that heard it and oil pressure was running low. He babied it home (125 mi.) at the quietist rpm he could hold. First he found a broken valve spring and repaired it. Still had a noise and OP was still poor. Turned out to be the dreaded #2 rod bearing causing the low OP which finally took out a lifter. I hope your luck is better.

Tyler, if the oil pressure is not dropping, it must not be a bearing, doesn't make much sense to me. Give me a call later, I'm free all afternoon, and would love to help.

Today might be a bad day. Father's day, and I have work. I'll only get to do a little. I'll talk to you during the week if I do anything though.

Okay, compression all reads 160 except on the last cylinder which is about 130. But cylinder 4 has been low since my last valve fiasco. Tomorrow, when I get the proper tools I will check the timing marks to see if they line up. If that isn't the problem a screwed up lifter is the only thing I can think of.

Okay, the timing marks line up. I learned that an exhaust valve spring can be bad and still read good compression...it would also explain the light pops I get out out of the exhaust when turning it over. Hopefully I can have the valve cover off tomorrow.

You should drain the oil and look for metal filings. If it is a rod bearing you are only damaging your engine more every time you turn it over.

I've heard a rod bearing that has gone bad before and it made a knocking. What I have is not a knocking. I'm pretty sure that it's something with the valves.

The Cam sprocket was loose, really loose! It had alot of play in it. I noticed it was before we pulled the valve cover, but pulled it anyway. We also noticed that 2 of the lifters were loose. You could push the centers in pretty easily. So I guess I'm looking for new lifters, as soon as I have those hopefully it's fine.

Okay, mass post whoring going on here. But just for future reference for anyone on here. If the engine sounds like a diesel check the cam sprocket! That's all that was wrong with my engine. I got it back together today and am very happy.
