What do you consider "streetable?" I drive mine on the street but when it rains I sure miss those windshield wipers!
Pull the rear seat, hatch area carpet, spare tire, jack, sunroof motor, rear speakers, rear wiper, cruise control, AC, windshield washer tank, smaller battery and other easy stuff and you've lost over 200 lbs. OTOH, the MSD box, bigger sway bars, strut tower bar and a few other performance goodies and you've put 20 lbs back on. 500 lbs is probably posible but you'll be lightening your wallet faster than you'll be lighten the car.

I can see how its hard to loose 500 lbs.

But, if you are selling the stuff you take off then you are hardly spending money to get to 200lbs.

You forgot the passenger seat, & power steering.

So you can get 10hp with weight savings it seems for a street car without going to new body panels. Doesnt sound like a good idea to me.

I would also reccomend going to some light 15" wheels. Unsprung weight is a big concern.

Also another place to lose weight is the driver!

I'm not seling anything, it's all in my garage in case I decide to reinstall any of it. The spare and jack even go back in the car between autocrosses. Lightening does cost money, AC delete requires a belt and bracket, rear wiper delete requires a plug. In my case the cruise control came out to make room for the MSD box. Lighter batteries sometimes cost MORE than standard ones.
I didn't forget the power steering, I just haven't removed it (or spent the $700 for parts) yet. I didn't forget the passenger seat either, the car will remain a 2 seater, but if anyone knows a good deal on some lightweight race seats please let me know.

I'm working on that last one!

The wheels are easier, Fuchs are nice and light and CCs are only a little heavier, so the early cars are covered. I have no idea which wheels are light when it comes to late offset, Early PDs are pretty heavy and I doubt that the later ones are much lighter.

Just make sure you don't loose a floorboard or get any "DANGER TO MANIFOLD" warning messages on your laptop in the passenger's seat!

Seriously though, thats about the cheapest/easiest way to get 20hp out of a non-turbo.
Or 75hp to the rear wheels

Hey Dave,

What class do you run in in autoX? Are they SCCA sanctioned events? I having trouble classing my car with 2005 rule book. I want to lighten it, but according to the book I would be running in prepared or mod class, neither is appealing to me. I was told SM or SM2 on the autoX forum but I don't see where lightenend 944's are welcome there either.

Thanks,

Mine, with some decent weight reduction done to it, is classified (by the SCCA techs) in "CSP".

That's where I'll be running this Sunday, however I can't see where I can really reduce a lot of weight. I can't remove the rear seat at all according to the rules. Or am I reading the rules wrong? It says I can replace the seats with sports seats that are lighter but all the seats have to be there. If I remove the rear seat it puts me in prepared class.

Thanks,

Yep, that's the e-ticket straight to SP class. Unfortunately, the competition in CSP is downright ugly, with modified Miata's and MR2's. Getting your azz handed to you will make you a much better driver though (that silver lining in every cloud thing).

PCA events only for me, but I'm in M1 (Modified 4 cylinder Porsches, anything goes) and my competition is mostly single seat 914s and a modded 951.

Go to pca.org and look for your region. My local PCA has autoX events but you'd never know it from their website. If they don't list any, ask.
