88-89 Turbo S $$ Selling Price/Value?
Looking for a 88-89 Turbo "S". Most everything on autotrader, pca, and porsche-classified.com are ranging between 14k-20k depending on mileage, color, options..Looking at a few now, two with 60k miles. The sellers are asking anywhere from 18k-19k. What is a "good" deal on these cars?

What about $14,5k? with the M030 package? Belts, pump, clutch, new tires, control arms, no mods.
This may be a stupied ?, but what is the major difference between the regular 88' turbo and the 88-89 turbo "S"

Got my '88 951S for $10,500 with 72k miles on it. I think I got a great deal, most seem to be selling for around $14k or more...
If you look hard enough, you might be able to find one tho...

Did you have to put any immediate money in the car, or was it pretty much set up right? Have you heard anything about porsche-classified.com? Looking at a few cars on this site, seems most are older men who have unrealistic values associayed with their 994 Turbo S.

I did the timing belt/balance shaft belt/tensioners/rollers/seals/water pump/thermostat service, but I'd expect to do that on almost any 951.
It came with the chips and exhaust. I did all the safety equipment...

Is there any specific chip that I need to stay away from? Looking at one car that has 82k, its an "S" with a autopower roll bar, chip, 968 cup sway bar, strut brace, 20k on clutch, engine rod bearing done, additional oil cooler, belt adjustment, 3" exhaust. He is asking $15.5 and the car has been tracked about 8 times.

Check out Bruce Anderson's Reader's Sales Reports in Excellence this month.(Oct 05) There are 2 89 Turbo S's in there. One sold for $17,000 and Bruce said the Seller did WELL. The other sold for $14,000 and he said an excellent car should bring $13,463.
It has been my experience, that I CAN'T sell a car for what Bruce says it is worth. I would have been thrilled to sell my 91 C2 for what he said it was worth, but I missed that figure by over $3,000, and had the car for sale for 4 months.
I would make a fair offer, (somewhat less than Bruce says it is worth) then wait them out. People are not selling these cars for anywhere near what they are asking. When buying or selling, patience is the key. He who appears to care the least, wins!

Thank you for your feedback. So, you think 10-13k is a fair offer for a 944 Turbo "S" with 60k miles, records, maitenance up to date, etc.. I don't want to offend the seller in anyway, but some of these asking prices are ridiculous in my opinion...20-25k...with low mileage..
Have you heard of porsche-classified.com?

Well, it depends. There aren't all that many S's out there, and the one that are original paint and low mileage will demand a premium.
Vitesse chips are best, but others are fine, I haven't had any issues with my weltmeister ones.

You got a steal on your car...I can't find anything near $11k. Most guys get upset if I even stray pass the 14K mark..What are the main issues I need to be weary of when I start looking at higher mileage 951 S?

Yeah, I did pretty well on mine.
I'd get it inspected by a good porsche mechanic, nothing to worry about other than the normal stuff, clutch, front seals, t-belt/balance shaft belt, oil pan gasket, etc, etc.

There will be the similar issues that you have with any 944 turbo.
When I bought my low mileage, one owner, 88TS back in 1990 I paid $20,000 for it. That car had an original sticker on it of around $50,000 so i figured I got a good deal. Now with 44,000 miles on it and still in pretty great condition I could probably get nearly as much as I paid for it. There aren't many still around and the prices seem to vary all over the map. If they are selling for 10 grand, there is a reason.

Thanks for the info. I am speaking to two gents now, and am getting all kinds of feedback as far as values on these cars. I am looking at 2 89' 951 "S", one with 62k and the other with 82k. Both want around the same price. One has stated that he will go as low as $14,5 (62k miles) and the other is asking $15,5k (82k miles) has been tracked about 8 times includes roll bar, upgraded suspension, chip, etc..been modified, but maintained well. The car with 62k miles is bone stock and in perfect condition, with the exception of emissions issues (owner doesn't know why it is not passing and porsche can't give a reason...little weary...).
Whats a good deal for a 951 S with 62k to 80k miles and well maintained?

Here's a question: Why are you so hung up on getting an S? Seems to me like you could find a significantly cleaner (lower miles, better this, better that) 86-87 Turbo. For the record, the Turbo S was available only in '88, with all following years being brought up to S spec (right?)
Antontio bought his '86 (or is it an '87?) turbo for something near half those asking prices you mentioned. Miles are sub 80k. See my point? Same lo-miles car with GOBS of money leftover for your own mods.
One more thing. These cars, like nearly ANY collectable cars are fettish properties. Comic books, baseball cards, muscle cars, classic guitars, you name it. It's worth whatever people are willing to pay for it. Period. Ten years after its release, the immortal Carrera RS's were being given away. Now, original examples are bringing a healthy six figures. A 944 Turbo Cup (uber-cool factory racer), despite the fact that it is more rare than an RS isn't worth $75K with spares, or so the market says. See my point??
