Default Trans clamping sleeve

Ok..Finally devoted a few hours of work to the trans and got those cheeseheads out (holy crap they were a PITA) and everything is ready for the trans to come down. Only problem is I can not get the clamping sleeve all the way off. It can acutally support the trans (thank god it did, the jack went down) but I wanna get this trans off and the new one on. Any tips on getting the sleeve all the way off?

Thanks
Mike

Take the cheeseheads all the way out, make sure the tranny and torque tube are level with each other as not to bind and if you still can't slide the coupler off by hand, then with a large screwdriver and hammer lightly tap the coupler toward the tranny.

Hey David, did all of that

I couldn't even slide it off when the trans crossmember was still bolted to the car. I'll try some more though

thanks

Mike,
Is the tranny still attached to the bellhousing? That really helps allign the coupler so it slides off by hand. IF its not attached, then bolt it back up real quick and it should slide right off. Good luck

The tranny was hanging by the coupler? Couldn't that bend the driveshaft in the torque tube?

Mike,
Yeah, throw those bolts back in, the coupler really should come off before you take those out. I did the same thing as you and had to go back to put them in as well before my coupler came off. Nothing alligns the tranny as well as those bolts. Good luck.

I didn't have this problem but I'm not so sure about David F's solution. Try prying with a crow bar and see if you can move it. It may just be some corrosion on it, especially if you lost the rubber cover for the hole you are going through.

Hey Iceshark -- Been doing that..still stuck. Intresting thing is both of my rubber covers were still on. The inside of that trans was very clean!

BUT - Today I started the car by accident (was doing some wiring while taking a break from the trans) by turning the key too far and letting it start by accident ran about 2 seconds before I realized what I did. It made a noise coming from the transmission and while looking at it and feeling around with my finger I had some metal dust and broken metal part with grooves in it. I took a pic of it but I have to upload it. All the teeth I can see on the shafts look alright. I feel like a complete idiot!!!

I'll head over to the parts store after work and try and find the eize for you SM

Hopefully the metal parts you found were on the coupling. I'm on the other coast but I have a good 951 coupling you can have for the cost of shipping if yours is toasted.

Yeah, it'll be a bummer if it's the torque tube shaft... but, even if it is, biggest difficulty will be sourcing a new one as it is not too tough to change. once the trans is out anyway.

Just saying what worked for me.

I also used anti-sieze on the splines when reinstalling
