Default I have to beat a GTO

One of the guys at work has been itching for a new GTO. I try to tell him that you have to be able to go fast in turns, not just in a straight line. The magazine foldout next to his desk claims 0-60 in 4.6 seconds.

My '89 951 has Autothority chips, otherwise stock. I understand that a Vitesse chip will be significantly better. I'll probably be calling them and spending a bunch of money.

So...it's inevitable that the unnamed co-worker (Mike) will want to race me when he gets his car. We'll have to be on a track to do it properly. Maybe I can convince him that drifting is not the coolest thing you can do with a car.

Is the 0-60 in 4.6 seconds real? Will I get spanked (in a straight line?) I've seen a wide range of claimed 0-60 times for 951's with varying claimed HP.

I'm assuming I'll have my car before he does. After a month of promises I got another shipping company and the driver is supposed to pick it up in the morning..

No problem. my dad and I did that in our 88 Turbo S with the same chips, so basically, the same car... it's really not that tough, provided you know how to drive.

in a straight line, you're f*cked... first corner, you'll be able to out brake him, and go through the corner faster than he will.

Cue Tom R. in 5...4...3...2...1...

Yes, you will get spanked. Hard by a lot of RL'rs if you don't take it off the road

Performance Comparisons 944 Turbo (M 44.51)
Horsepower
217 HP @ 5800 rpm
Torque
243 ft-lbs. @ 3500 rpm
0-60 mph
6.1 sec.

944 Turbo S (M 44.52)
Horsepower
247 HP @ 6000 rpm
Torque
258 ft-lbs. @ 4000 rpm
0-60 mph
5.5 sec.

Based on above you are only .5sec off.

If he misses a shift you are about dead even given you are driving an S
which I am guessing you are by the color of the Avitar.

Easiest thing is going to be know the gears. The maxes are posted in the owners manual.

There are a quick few tricks that you can do to get you to 4.9 I am sure.
If you wanna make a show play then get a set of really sticky tires for the
rear. Pilots or Hoosiers. I am just trying to give you some cheap ideas.

These cars were not built for dragging, they were built for overall performance.

Good luck and let us know how your 15yo car WHOOPED his brand new one

Unfortunately, I agree. If there is more than 1/8 of a mile before the first corner you'll be in the rear view mirror.

The Holden GTO's are amazing.

Well,
GTO is not a road course type of car. It will rip up the 1/4 mile pretty good though. You will definately get beat to 60mph or so (V8 low end torque). After that, if you can keep the turbo at full boost (3200rpms and up) you might actually beat him at the end of the strip. This would take massive amounts of abuse to your car though. Now, if you had a T4 turbo, Vitesse software, and a full 3" exhaust and a good wastegate, you would embarass him. And that stuff isn't all that expensive, considering he's buying a 40K$ car and our 951s aren't more then 15K$ (in really nice shape). Spend 4K$ and it would be over before it started. Good luck and let us know how it goes. Maybe film it....that would be really great.

Haha, No not a Bazillion. If I told you how much I've spent, you'd think me a liar. The conversion was not that expensive. The paint, wheels, tires, brakes, suspension, seats, and restoration in general is where most of the money was spent. Going 0 to 100 in 9.0 secs......... priceless!

try getting him from a 20 mph roll-on. our cars dont like to launch, if i run the 1/4 mile, i run 15 seconds, if i race people from a roll, i can run with mid-high 12-second cars with a chip and exhaust. aside from being in the right gear......try to brake boost. you have all the turbo S goodies in an '89, it should be more than able to handle most new stock cars from a roll.

I saw an automatic 05 GTO on a mustang do the quarter in 13.2 at the autoshow in motion.

I know my 04 GTO will pulverize my S2 in a straight line. Yes, the numbers are real.

As for turns, my S2 will murderize the GTO on a track, but on the street, as in on a nice sweeper like a highway entrance ramp the GTO will hold its own. for a 3800 car the GTO handles pretty good, steering is number than a married mans you know what compared to the crisp input you get in the S2.

The cars are so different it isnt funny. i would take the GTO cross country in a minute compared to the S2.

I have not driven the S2 much at all since i got the GTO. As far as an all around package, the GTO is better than the S2. It is a bit faster, more luxorious, easier on the butt, and takes turns pretty nicely, but alas not nearly as sporty. The sound from the V8, ahhh, thats nirvana, makes the S2 sound like any imported four cylinder with a stick shift.

Fast is one thing cool is another...

In my 911 and 928 I have been smoked by Vipers, ZO6's and other american muscle.

However driving a Porsche gives you respect.

thats why i bought my porsche. Works great for those with a small scheween, and the inferiority complex that goes with it.

When I was lapping a 911TT in my lowly S2 I realized mine was not the smallest, his had to be. But he got the respect he bought!!

send in the clowns.
