Angry A bit ticked.... please read

This is a cross-post as it is on pelican as well, but i figured the more opinions the better....

Well, i finally got the starter motor i won off of ebay and installed it.

Before bidding on the motor i knew that just any starter wouldnt work, and that some starters (non-944 starters) would crank the motor backwards... Which is why i only placed a bid after reading that it was a 944 starter, and had been used for one month.

So i got it all in, cranked the motor.... no start... so i grew suspicious. I popped her in first gear, and cranked her... and sure enough the car went backwards.

the auction is here

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...BSAA%3AUS%3A11

So im looking for advice....

1) theres no way i could have possibly wired it backwards... right? It is cranking.

2) Has this done any damage to my car?

3) What kind of action should i take against the ebay seller?

I've known big diesel trucks to backfire and run backwards. sucks through exhaust and exhaust out the intake. Not sure if it will mess anything up on our cars

dont crank it backwards unless you like your belt loose and your valves tight--against the pistons.

Can't you just take out the starter and hook it up directly to a 12v source and see which way it turns? Our engines rotate clockwise right? In case the starter should be rotating clockwise as well since it engages the flywheel facing the engine the other way.

If your belt is still timed correctly and did not jump any teeth you should be ok. It is not a good thing to do but the clearance should still be there.

as for the seller, report it to the seller see what response you get. If they take it back and send you a correct one then ok. If they ignore you then about all you can do is give negative feedback.

You need to contact the seller. Yes, he should have tested it on a 944 to make sure it works, and then listed it. As most of you guys know (most have purchased parts at one time or another!!), I sell quite a few parts. There have been times that I have tested parts before shipping, and all was good. By the time the part arrived, after being bounced around a lot, and probley stepped on, had a couple of tv's or whatever stacked on top, somehow, it didn't work. Of course, I replaced it.
So check with the seller.

Could it perhaps be a 924 starter? Certainly looks like one, and the 2.0L NA 924 uses a starter mounted in front of the flywheel, not behind like the 924 Turbo and, from what I understand, 944?

You could likely sell it for at least what you paid to a 924 owner...

I only cranked the motor for a few seconds... and when it didnt start... i immediatly stopped cranking. I was able to bump-start the car last night, and all is well. Guess i need another motor though... this time im buying from paragon.
