Well its official, Im driving ol' yeller back to MN
I have officially purchased Rock's 84' Yellow 944 and am flying out March 15th to drive it back. I figured it would be a fun adventure for my spring break.
The route I was going to go is as follows:
VA-607 N 0.7 miles
VA-267 W 9.0
US-15 N 25.1
I-70 W 76.4
I-76 W 184.4
I-80 W 354.4
I-90 W 270.9
I-94 W 174.0
US-12 W 23.5
It is also shown in the mapquest photo below.
Does anyone have any advice for these highways/areas? I would like to avoid speed traps and the like.
I have taken road trips before, but this will be the longest. Any advice?

Good luck on the drive! Don't stay in Juliette or is it Joliete (SP) Il. I know that Rock made it through the mountains/hills of PA just watch for trucks going through the area.

Alright so dont stay in Joliette and dont break down in Gary, Inidanna.
Michael, what do you mean watch for trucks? Do they speed through the mountains? Never really driven through mountains before, so that will be fun. Especially with a 944
It would be easier to have faith if I knew the car better. I have faith in Rock though 
What tools should I bring? Granted they have to fit in my luggage or be cheap enough for me to buy at a local tool place in VA.
What would you do if you were a poor college student? Just sleep in the car at rest stops or check in to a hotel/motel? I have heard shady things about rest stops, and this is my first time going it alone.

Ok. first, the hatch makes a great bed... it really does...
Second, I'd recommend a 19mm, a 17mm, a 13mm, 12mm, and a 10mm socket... those are BASICALLY all that you need on these cars, with few exceptions... give it fresh oil and check coolant before you hit the road, but you probably knew that.

Watch you speeds in PA and on the Ohio Turnpike. The Ohio Troopers love to ticket on the turnpike especially the 4p to Mid shift. If you are on Ohio Turnpike and need to sleep in the rest areas you should be fine they are well lit.

Traffic through Chicago is a$$ depending on what time you come through here. You might want to stick to the toll road (294 around the city) instead of through downtown.

The Pa. turnpike is a pain in the ***,East of Pitts..The Ohio is a nice road,but as said before, watch your speed.There as a few of us listers here in N.E. Oh. that could help if necessary. Keep us posted on your trip plans. Fred

I once made the trip from Philadelphia to Minneapolis straight through with my yellow Lab in the back seat. I left Philly around 4am and arrived in Bloomington, MN around 11:30pm which included pit stops for me and my four legged friend. I was spent on arrival.
I agree with the above feedback on Chicago, I now live in the western burbs. Depending on when you come through town I-294 will be your best bet on getting through...I-90 through the city can be brutal. For a nice area of town to stop along your way where you and your new car will be safe try Schaumburg area right off of I-290.
