anti-theft ?
hi, im a proud new owner of a 1989 944 2.7,
I've been reading quite a bit about theft and break ins on 944's and was wondering, can't you just put an aftermarket alarm or disabler on?
Id really like to not have my 944 stolen or broken into. What precautions can I take or what alarms are good?
any help is appreciated.
thx

doesn't matter what alarm system you get...if a good enough thief wants your car...he's going to have it.
if you want something like lojack though, like devon said, be prepared to dish out the moolah.

How much would it cost to get Lojack or something like it...? What else is available that would be comparable to that level of security....? Not that I need it w/the shape my car's in, but I just like to know... Hell, one of these days I might win the lottery & have a few expensive cars... Well.... I'd probably have to play it first...

I have had good luck with a $50 alarm that I bought off ebay. It has the dual zone shock sensor, keyless entry, starter disable and battery backup siren. Just make sure whoever installs the system does a thorough job. I spent like 10 hours installing mine and making sure that I hid the wires under the dash and out of reach.
While its true that a professional thief can bypass the alarm, most amateurs do not want to deal with the hassle. The alarm on my truck more than paid for itself when it stopped the lowlife who broke the window from entering the vehicle.

$50 for all of that...? What kind is it...? I know nothing about alarms really... I've seen some cool ones, but just never really knew anything about them... Not meaning to hijack a thread here, but I guess this is a related question...

Damn, I thought I was the only one that did that. Face it folks, not that many 944's get stolen...I think the thieves know the DME relay might fail before the joyride is over.

Personally, I like the idea of what some rich guy did in a movie I saw a long time ago. I only saw part of it- would love to know the title- a guy gets into a 911, trying to steal it, & gets locked in- the windows were reinforced & the stereo was modded so it was blaringly loud & was controlled by remote, by the owner & the theif couldn't get out or turn the stereo off, etc... The guy traps the POS inside the car & proceeds to torture him in dif ways- for one thing, he lets the guy get his arm out the window & then rolls it up on his ***- it had a stronger motor or something & the guy couldn't get it loose Anyway, never saw the end of it. I don't have much respect for a scumbags who break into cars. Some POS scumbag broke my rear 1/4 window for a 15yr old amp... Yeah, BIG SCORE!!! I hope the crack rock he bought w/the $10 he probably got for my 15yr old amp killed him...
What the hell do you mean by "knowledge & a paperclip" anyway Patrat...? I must have neither... Can you make a paperclip work in a pinch or something if your DME fails...?

You can use a paper clip to short out sockets 85, 85a, and 30(? bad memory)but a jumper wire set works better. I have a bad DME relay I keep in the 83 now, I gutted it and wired those 3 legs only. It's easier to plug in during an emergency than trying to blindly plug wires into sockets on an early car way under the dash.

Sorry, I'm slow when it comes to electrical... Do you mean to short it out so the car wont start? OR to short these points so the car would run w/out DME relay? Sorry if that's a completely stupid question... I just wasn't sure which direction Patrat's response was going...
