It looks like the PO got the nut on the end of the fuel rail crossthreaded, we tried to get the nut off to check fuel pressure, it jammed half-way so we tightened it up and it leaks. I mentioned this in a previous post. I removed the nut yesterday and the steel ball is in the nut but when retightened it still leaks gas from under the nut. My question is, can the threads on the fuel rail be repaired? I have a replacement rail on the way but it cost $200.00, and I do not want to throw the old one out if it can be repaired.

mike which rail do you have? the one with 2 tubes comming off of it or three? I know someone with the 2 tube rail for sale, and there is always DC auto (www.dcauto.com).

If you found someone with a big enough die, I bet the threads would clean up enough to seal. If that doesn't work, I suppose a welder could add back meterial, but you wonder if it's worth it.

Just curious, was the $200 for a brand new rail?

No, it is a used rail off a 1983 844 from Porschapart in Toronto, Canada. I get all my used parts from them. I think I'll take the old rail to a diesel engine rebuilding place and talk to them, I'm sure it can be fixed. I can't get to my mech to check the fuel pressure, perhaps the pressure is excessive, causing the leak, but I suspect it's not sealing now because of the damaged threads.
A hard start problem caused this trouble initially,

What a great place this is! Thanks a bunch, fellas, but I have a 83 rail bought from Porschapart in Toronto for $CAD 200.00 on the way. I called a diesel injection repair shop and they thought they could repair the leaking one OK, so I can sell that when it's done. The threads are buggered on the leaking one.
