Default Fuel Octane Requirement

Hi, I am about to pick up my 944 tomorrow from the guy I bought it off of. I have searched but can't find it anywhere. What grade of fuel do you use for a 1988 944?

Thanks
Mark

Joo wanna use at least 89 methinks. 1988s have ROW pistons, which might not mean jack **** to you because all canada cars might have them hell if i know.

I use 89 octane in my 88 944 and it runs great. I have also used 87 somtimes and it is ok with that too. My mechanic (porsche dealer mechanic) says that 87 is fine and uses it in his 944.

But that is in the US i do not know if raitings are diffrent in canada.

Oh and please post some pics one you pick her up we all love some fun 944 ****

ouch really? i called scottsdale porsche & spoke to receptionist/tech cant remember which & they said should always use the higher octane gas. there is a german sticker in my inner fuel cap lid that says something & has the number 91 listed so i put nothing in there now but 91 octane. yes its hard on the ol wallet but i figure its the right thing to do & hopefully will help engine last longer. And better performance i hope, ha.

My '88 944S was running rough, knocking and such, with 90 octane (US Rating) in there. Got worse the lower the tank got. I only put 98 octane in there now (German rating.. I think the octane rating is a little bit different in germany from the states?) And yeah, that's expensive as hell over here. 10 euro ($12.26) bought me 7 liters of gas, not even 2 gallons

The 944s use a knock sensor. Any pinging and the computer will retard the timing to stop it. Decreases performance in doing so.
I don't know when the 944s started with the sensor, but the 88 models do.

Per 1987 owner's manual: 91 RON (87 CLC) for 944, 95 RON (90 CLC) for 944S/ 944 Turbo

I am pretty sure up to '87 you can use 87 octane without much fault. From '88 on the 944 used higher compression and probably needs atleast 89 in the '88 and probably atleast 91 in the '89 2.7L cars.

The 16v cars are a completley different story, i figure they all require atleast 93.

I run my '87 with FRWilk's chip on 87 without issue. I noticed no difference between 93, 89 and 87. 87 is what it gets!

87 was 9.7:1 88 was 10.2:1. For the higher compression motors the facotry says to use 91 octane, so I wouldnt use anything less.

I dont think any 8v N/a have knock sensors. I might be mistaking.

I know the turbos, the s2's and the S do however, and probally the 2.7
