The infamous engine; the finale?
Hi all, it's been a while.
After all this forum went through with me it seemed fitting to write up what may be the final chapter on the AMW motor. It's been 3 years and change and about 9,000 miles and the car has run well, but for the last few months I noticed a bit of oil odor. Driving out to Pocono for a PCA event a couple weekends ago the smell was stronger than ever, when i popped the hood the next morning I found a little oil on the head below the #1 injector that looked like it was seeping from the cam tower. I reasoned that it must be new since the week befor at the pre-event tech the mechanic commented that this was the cleanest 944 engine he'd seen in a while. During the event I watched the oil level between run groups and wiped up the seepage before it had a chance to run down and drip under the car, I used 2 or 3 quarts over 2 days but it's hard to say how much was burned on the track vs. what was leaking out.
I dropped it of at the shop last week (new shop, not the place i was using when the engine went in) and I just got a call this morning, blow by. It looks like this engine is done and I am probably done too.

If you're really addicted, you'll buy a 928! There as addictive as crack cocaine. Sounds like you didn't get enough 944. Seriously, the only way to survive some Pcars is to do the wrenching yourself.

No 928 for me, they're great on the track but they don't seem to autocross well. At this point I doubt theres another P-car in my near future. I'd love to do the wrenching myself but its been 20 years since I did anything major and I really just dont have the time, the tools or the space, let alone the confidence in my ability to do the job.

You only got three years out of the engine? I need to see the original thread, there must be more to this story.
Was it a weekend driver you raced?
I am about to get an engine redone and now I am scared a little.....

Dave,
my heart just sank. AAARRGGHHH! what a ball twising ordeal you've gone through.
Part the car and start over. easy to say, not so easy to do with a family.
I sold my brother the gray S2 because i didnt want to go through what you went through and got a 951 with 20k of receipts in the last 10k miles. Well, at least I learned from your experience.
Experience, not mistake. your only mistake was using anderson, who was supposed to be great.

That just sucks Dave. I'm sorry to hear that. Although, I must say it finally took a crap later than I thought it would. Maybe you should go back and update that original AMW thread with this latest news so the story can have an "ending", so to speak. At the very least, it might aid those in the future that do a search for Anderson Motorworks here on this site. Is Anderson even still in business? I can't recall.

I just had to search for AMW.... here's one thread:
Linky
There's a link to the SD Better Business Bureau, too, in that thread
And it looks like he's still in business, or at least paid his hosting fees...

Tenga buen dia

If the 928 is a Cadillac, then the 944 is a Cavalier. Ha!

Ja, ja, ja! Eres buen tipo. Y, aunque yo no quiera confesarlo, tienes razon. Los 928 cuestan mas para mantener...pero son lujosos mi hijito! Para nosotros los viejitos tenemos que quidar a los huevos.
Vaya con Porsche, mi amigo.

Lart951,
With 341WHP and 349TQ @ 19psi, how long do you figure it'll be before your pistons come through the hood? That's some serious pressure, my friend. I once left my transmission gears scattered under a stoplight in a '32 Plymouth Street Rod (Vette engine).
