Default Almost there!

A fellow just did a dyno for me and the graph shows 5HP and 7Lbs TQ total increase, but you can see on the graph that the overall gain across the board is is 8-12HP conservatively. I'm going to clean up the AFR a bit, even though to the untrained eye it may look fine. What you've heard all these years from people saying things like "Nice flat AFR you got there" is not necessarily a good thing. To make the most effective power across the board the engine's AFR has to change, in unison with its power curve, which changes with different engines and different mods. Now this same car with a reworked head, high flow exhaust, running 100 Octane fuel could develope another 20HP. But the intake, head, and exhaust work would cost thousands. So if you're not using your 944 as a full out race car, it's difficult to justify that kind of expenditure. Whereas 200 bucks for a chip which will greatly improve drivability and provide 8-10HP is much more bang for your buck.

As I said, one more dyno trip and the 944MAX chips will be released this month. I know you guys have waited over a year, and I apologize for that. But we're finally almost there!

Regards,
Russell

This sounds like a great product, and one I'd love to purchase for my '84. Would you consider releasing the chips to people who feel they could remove the old chip and add a socket for the new chip themselves? I suppose there's nothing stopping me from purchasing the chip and trying to adapt it myself, however, I don't know the ECU differences between the early and late cars, even if I'm confident in my soldering abilities.

Could the chip be optimized for headers, head work, free flow exhaust, and 93 Octane for a non-tuner like me?

so you have to use high octane fuel for this chip?

with the high gas prices not sure if it is worth paying for supreme fuel for 8 hp.

does the mapping on this chip eliminate the stock high-RPM leaning of mixture?

Money must be very tight Spencer. I average 22miles per gallon and pay $0.17 a gallon more for super premium. That's less than a cent a mile!

Look at it this way. If someone offered you 8hp across the range and better drivability for the cost of a chip and 1cent a mile would you consider it good value?

Mike

Actually there's more to it than just removing a soldered chip and putting in a socket. To convert the old ECU's for a later style chip you must remove more than one chip, and make/buy an adapter board. FR Wilk makes an adapter board, and an associate of mine has designed something similar, and he was going to be doing conversions of old ECUs and offering a turnkey ECU swap. But I haven't talked to him in a while and don't know if he's still interested in doing that. Second option would be to get a later ECU and AFM from an 85.5 or later model. I would still like to do, or have someone who can do the ECU conversions, I'll keep you posted on that.

Regards,
Russell

Yes, I can produce a custom chip for any configuration.

Gas mileage will suck with a new chip, because you won't be able to keep your foot out of it!

Seriously, the mappings overall are leaner, so fuel economy will actually be better.

Russell

Yes, I recommend 91 octane or higher, preferrably higher. As far as I know, every aftermarket chip recommends the same.

Not sure what you mean, every dyno I've seen of the stock 944NA go quite rich at higher rpms. I actually make it leaner. I've found in all of the 944NA/S/S2 cars that more power can be made simply by leaning the mixture a little. Remember Porsche shipped these cars all over the world, and could not be certain everyone had quality fuel. Therefore they mapped the chips on the rich side.

Russell
