Default NA maf - great results, and a question?

I highly suggest someone else follow me in this and get some real gains in their NA,,, so after wanting to do the MAF conversion for a while and not wanting to pay $1k, i got off my butt and used the parts i have had in the garage for about 6 months -
Ford contour MAF (from the 4cyl 2.0) - Split Sec psc-104 signal programmer- and I used a multi-meter attached to my o2 as my AF gauge.

after everything was installed I messed around with tuning, and the best thing I have found so far was no signal alteration! so someone could technically just wire in the maf and drive, It pulls HARD in the upper rpms and idles smother than before. I was runing very rich for some reason before the install, but now all is well.

the maf does not max out voltage which means it is the proper size and could even support more flow. the highest voltage it is sending out is 3.5v out of the possible 5v (i can record my run voltage/rpm with my laptop attached to the split-sec box)

I am sure af ratio could be better, got a wierd back fire and maybe am lean in upper rpms, so i will mess around some more tommorow,, but the good thing is, How i wired it I can switch back to the AFM in a matter of minutes and run 0-60 times to get some hard numbers for everyone here. I think i may take advantage of Best Buy's return policy to borrow a G-meter for this......

oh yea and my question, I am pulling an rpm signal from the negative side of the coil like have on cars before, but reading it on my computer the rpms are oscillating by about 3k any ideas? or a better place to pull rpm signal?

pics and more to come,,
Derek

and oh yea - trick or treat!?

Did the MAF just plug in to the existing wiring plug, or did you have to splice?

I bought the maf with the plug from the ford, the 4 wires on the plug are marked A to E, with one terminal left empty. A will be 12v (not the 5v the AFM gets) the middle 2 are grounds, and E is output voltage to send to the DME.

and the MAF fits to the stock j-boot with a little stretching, just needa 3 1/4 round filter to attach to the inlet side.

my motor is a little different than the 2.5 (2.7 with cam, no cat) , but it runs off the 2.5 chip also so im sure you guys have too much trouble.

How do you think this would do on a 86 turbo? Any thoughts or solution yet for the leaning out at upper limits. Interesting project on the cheap, I love it!

I think the contour MAF wouldnt flow quite enough for a turbo

How about 89-95 mustang 5.0 MAF? Its what a few 944 vendors use... you can find them on ebay for $50-100

oh i am also lovin the $ saved, I have heard it was impossible to do this with so little, i mean no! signal alteration, but so is getting power from an NA.....right? ha!

but on the 951, you might want to get better AF ratio monitoring than me becasue a lean situation + boost is much more dangerous than my setup, maybe check the diferences in 951 vs. 944 AFMs they could be very similar,,
i will get more tuning in tommorow to figure out my upper rpm deal,,

I will bring parts, beer and whatever else you need if you get this working on your car and you'll jam one in mine.

Also, I have heard folks use a 5.0 throttle body. Has anyone tried both the mustang 5.0 MAF and TB?

Ok, I am interested - I have three cars that would benefit from this.

Found this, http://www.goingsuperfast.com/for944turbo.html

D.I.Y Mass Air Flow your 944 turbo for less than $500.
Part 1. get a air flow meter and harness from Ford Mustang from junk yard for $75 or less.
Part 2. get a apexi s-afc-2 super air flow converter for $300 - $350
www.apexi.com
Part 3. 3 hours of your time
Part 4.Cost less than the one on the market.
Part 5 install a air temp sensor (air temp sensor has two wires one is ground one is signal does not matter which one
use as ground)
