Engine Vibration, Exhaust noise 944 s2
Hi All,
I am a complete non-techy when it comes to engines and cars so bear with me!
I have just driven my 1991 944 s2 on around a 200 mile journey (mainly on motorway), about half way through the ride suddenly became a bit juddery. The engine still pulled fine and there was no sign of overheating or drop in oil pressure.
When I slowed right down I noticed the engine was making more noise than normal and when idle there is obvious vibration. I notice too that the exhaust is growling (very deep) and blowing more than normal.
The car was running fine this morning when I set off. I dind't think the exhaust was in too bad shape or due for replacement
What does this suggest to you guys.?
Would a knackered exhaust cause the engine to vibrate or what could have blown?
Any help gratefully appreciated!

Hey;
Start the car, take a rag, and hold it over the tail pipe to block it off. You'll hear any exhaust leaks as a hissing sound. This might explain any noise, but probably not vibrations. For that I'd check for a failed motor mount, most likely the right side. That could explain both.

When the motor mounts fail, you get a lot more noise because the body resonates with the vibration. They're a common failure. That's where I'd be looking, too, if the exhaust checks out okay. Somewhat time-consuming to do yourself, but not too technically challenging. And it would save you a good chunk of $ on labor. Do a search and check Clark's Garage for a procedure on how to evaluate them and/or replace them. Good luck.
