Has anyone ever noticed how many of the dash and console trim pieces appear to be a dark brown, rather than black?



Has anyone painted or otherwise recolored them to a more true black?

Just something I've wondered about off and on and was bored enough to see what others' thoughts/experiences might be.

I've noticed the same thing and I'm also wondering if anybody has attempted to "blacken" them.

I used black Kiwi leather shoe dye on my steering wheel and it turned out great! It’s the liquid dye with the sponge dauber. Not sure if it would work on plastic trim.

Wow - I'd forgotten about this post. To the subject though, I recently saw on a FB thread where an owner removed all of his brownish plastic trim pieces and spray painted them a true black. He showed several photos and the result was really nice. I've looked for the past half hour and cannot find the link, but if I do, I'll share it here.

To be honest, I was on the PorschePhiles mailing list way back in 1993. Most members there made their way here and now I see them on FB groups. Rennlist was my favorite group though, as it's easiest to find past posts using Google + Rennlist + topic.

@Rob Edwards has great results with a matte paint from a rattle can (SEM?). I don't know that I can find the link either (it may be over on a different forum), but his restorations of trim pieces back to black look great.

ETA: Rob Edwards is typically over on the 928 forum, I lost track of where I was. Nonetheless, if you Google his work on 928s, you'll find examples of what he's done to make the black plastic pieces look good.

I used a Rustoleum product on a piece recently and it looks pretty good, to me.
