I've never done it myself but i'm reasonably technically capable. However, we don't even leave for the Twin Cities until this Sunday so it would probably be 3 weeks until I finally have time to help out. Nonetheless, i'd like to meet up with the other locals.

Eric...looks like I need to do my front seal and not the rear...Seth "Bad Luck" Clayton

what's so bad about the cheesehead bolt? I just tapped mine with a hammer a few times them used a breaker bar to break it loose.
the camshaft seal isn't hard to replace but you need to have a method to retension the timing belt.

I stripped that cheesehead in my turbo. We were being oh-so-careful with it too but it's just really prone to stripping. Finding a drill, adapter, and bit combination that will fit in that confined space was also a pain in the ***. But if you do strip it out, at least I have the proper $15.00 drill bit to drill it out.

Sounds good Steve! Lemme know when you get to town. I don't know any of the other 944 guys around here, since I just bought mine, but two of us is a start!

Another trick is to buy the expensive/quality triple sq. bit, dont use a cheap one. That will help avoid stripping the bolt head.
Ton of 944s in the area. A lot of guys active in the local PCA region, running cars up at BIR and over at Road America, Blackhawk, etc. Years ago, not too many do-it-yourselfers, but in the last few years that number has been growing pretty fast.
P-car race shop that specializes on 944s is in Woodbury/Mahtomedi area, about a mile off of 694 and hwy 120.
Steve, you bringing those 2 944s with you, or did you end up selling one or both?

What's the name of the shop? I like to work on my own as much as possible but it's good to know there is a shop that knows 944's in the area.
I've got a solid offer on the '83 944 (just waiting for payment) and thus will only be bringing the '86 944 Turbo with me. In fact i'm going to drop it off this morning to be shipped out there.
Looking forward to meeting you all when I get there,
-Steve

If you get a group together, i'll happily come over! I don't have much experience with that particular job but I'm certainly willing to help. And, as stated above, i'll be happy to bring that drill bit in case you happen to strip out the cheeshead.

I can pretty much do it whenever. I run my own business, so picking a day is pretty easy. I don't have the flywheel lock or the tension gauge however...I'll provide good cooked food and beer!

I'm sure there's someone locally who has a flywheel lock and you can easily buy a Kricket for cheap from a local Napa or other autoparts store. Where is this all happening?
