Default How difficult is it to replace the shift lever? Worn pin.

Hi All - The Mrs. was driving (I was riding shotgun) when the shift **** broke loose on our '88 944. Ooooww! We made it to the shoulder and I discovered the clip had fallen off the pin and the **** was free of the transmission. Closer inspection revealed that the pin is worn and I expect the clip to fall out again. I've found a shift lever replacement ($54) but now wonder if this is something a novice like myself can replace. I own basic tools can change a spark plug but wouldn't dare remove a transmission.
Thanks for any jokes and/or advice.

Hey there. It is a really simple job. Make sure you replace all of the hardware (bushing, washer, eclip). I bought mine at Performance (www.automotion.com) but I am certain other folks have sponsored suggestions. Once you pop the shift surround off, it is just two bolts. (13mm I believe/use an extender). The hardest thing is getting the bushing off. I would replace the bushing. Also have some CV grease around for re-insertion. Make sure you wear gloves as it is pretty sooty down there. Also, make sure you have a magnet handy for when you lose a washer in the foam. Good luck.

It's a very simple job that's a little messy. Probably the hardest part for me when I did it was the silly little bushing that the ball rides in.

When you replace the shifter put in the 924 bushing... the best $1.50 you will ever spend, guaranteed. I did mine with the shift rod still in the car.

When I replaced a 2nd worn shifter in about 3 years I put the bushing in. Afterwards I couldn't believe the difference, very precise feel. The inside of the shift rod from the transaxle gets worn too and this repairs that wear.

Just did this for our s2. Mark the bolt pattern with a permanent marker before removing.
