Default How much gear whine do you hear on your car?

My son is concerned that the gear whine in his mint 85.5 N/A is excessive. I drove the car tonight, and when warm and decellerating from speed on a downhill slope, I can hear some gear whine in 2 & 3 gear. I didn't think it excessive - he's concerned because none of his buddies with manual tranny cars experience this. I attribute it to Porsche sports car vs sedans with more insulation etc.

Anyone else with a noisy gear box? I changed the tranny oil to Redline MT90 synthetic gear oil about 12,000 miles ago. Shifts perfectly, smooth engagement, no driveline backlash, just the gear whine off the gas going downhill.

I hear a little in 2nd or 3rd and I'm off the gas - of course when I really hear it I'm right next to a concrete wall so that bounces all the sound into my open windows! From everything I have read it is a pretty normal phenomenon.

Where in the PNW are you? I'm in Portland.

Take the carpet out of the hatch- it's like a thrashing machine in the back.

I don't really hear any either, with Swepco or Redline. My gearbox has never been apart and doesn't show any obvious signs of wear (e.g., no worn synchros, etc.). 135k miles.

I hear a strange whining noise coming from the tranny when it is very hot outside and I start to drive the car less than maybe 2 minutes after startup.

Any other noise however is a sign that you need a louder stereo.

Thanks guys... yep, changed the tranny oil to Redline MT90 synthetic gear oil some time ago. Done lots of tranny refills too, so I know the level is right. All the same, I'm going to put the car up on stands and check the fluid level again. Might be a little low as the gear whine is more noticeable on a downhill slope when the tranny is warm.

Carpet is there Brian - just that he's never heard anything like this in his buddies cars.... sedans that are wanna be sports cars! BTW, we dropped the motor into the 951S this past weekend - big job! So little space to manuever that thing!

944/951 trannies all start to whine over time. They also start to rattle at idle. Neither is a sign that the tranny is bad although it is a sign of age. Sometimes fresh fluid will quiet it down.

Just turn up the radio volume... makes everything run better.

my 86 and the 83 both have some noise to them. The 87 S is pretty quiet. I haven't had any of them long enough to make any claims as to longevity though.

You could pretend you're Tom Cruise in Top Gun, rev the engine and then go "What?! I can't hear you!"
