with how much money you dump into that early car you should just buy a turbo. That way, when you buy premium fuel, it will be justified.

I put either 89 or 92 in the S, I thought that with the higher comp ratio you should use a higher octane, but it runs on 89 like a charm. So I use mid grade I guess?

My car was running like *** with Plat 2s in it. I pulled them (after about 2000 miles) and they looked pretty cruddy. Put in single platinum Motorcraps because they parts store didn't have Bosch single plats in stock. It's run better since then (until the milk shake - but that's a different story).

For what its worth, I run regular, but did put premium in it for a few tanks and didn't notice it running any better while it had the +2s in it.

+1 those platinum x2, x4's don't really seem to do much except degrade engine performance. I put the x2's into my 4runner and it doesn't even feel remotely as torquey as it did when I had the regular NGK's in it. I run my 83' 944 with Bosch Platinum x1's on 87 and it runs like a dream. I ran it once or twice on 91 but couldn't feel enough difference to justify the extra $6 per tank / $48 per month / $576 per year.

My NA happily slurps down regular without trouble. I couple of times I've filled it with premium and haven't noticed much of a difference.

Plus is 89 and my 968 runs just fine with that. Plus is 94 which is great for the 951S

$6 a tank? Even at a $.20.gallon premium and assuming a 20 gallon fill up, that's only 4 bucks a tank or $192 a year. Still a good amount of money, but no where near that $576/year figure.

On the plugs though...+ 1. I concur as I did the same with my '83 when I had it. I am assuming my '88 will also do well with the regular platinums...

Last several gas stations I saw here in the Bay Area had about a $.30 cushion between regular and premium. $.30 x 20 gallons per fill up = $6, and I drive about 60-70 miles on average per day and about 100 miles per day on the weekends with my car getting 20mpg avg. which = about 2 fill ups per week so 6 x 2 x +/- 4 times per month = $576 a year. Of course, everybody's driving habits and mpg. per car are different.

I like to run premium in my car because when a refinery is cracking gas they run it through a couple of extra sulphur extractors for the longer process stuff - which premium is. That said I dont notice too much a difference between the two, except that it seems to idle and pick up off idle more smoothly on premium than regular. I also run a large gap on a copper plug with raised Euro spec compression, still havent noticed pinging on 87 oct though.

That said, everybody seems to like Chevron, and Ive used Exxon and Valero with pretty good sucsess but every time I run SHELL the mileage is poor, it has a funny smell at WOT, and the engine runs much MUCH HOTTER - like on the third bar of the guage vs on the second. Im not imagining things b/c occasionly I have to stop at Shell gas stations (different ones!) to get gas because I dont have a choice and the car has had these symptoms for about the 4th time in a row on Shell gas ONLY.

Does anyone else have issues with Shell?

Regular fuel should not cause hard starting. It actually burns better cold than Premium. That being said I Run premium in my S which is recommended by Porsche and Autothority which is the chip I have.

Bosch platinum plug are junk in a fuel Injected engine. The Center Electrode is too small and gets burned when the system is toggling lean. They run rich lean and back and forth to control HC's and CO' on one side and NOX on the other. I have removed these plugs from cars 5000 miles after they were installed and you can't even see the center electrode.

Remember that Texaco stations are now rebadged chevrons.

Aren't the factory recomendations for octane 91 for the n/a's and 96 for the turbo's, or something like that?
