My old 84' did the exact same thing....swaped the relay and it went away....for a few months. Came back and got worse/more frequent until finally it would not start at all....swaped coils, plug wires, checked this and that with an Ohm-meter...etc.
Having more skish than time at that point, I had it towed to the wrench...fuel pump was running but she was not pumping fuel! Solved the problem for good.....

There's apparently an impeller in there of some sort that had worn to the point of not supplying the proper pressure to allow the injectors to fire.

In my case it turned out to be bad solder joints in the DME itself. I hope a DME relay fixes yours!

Mine did this a few years ago. I ended up rewiring the majority of the engine bay trying to track down the problem. Either the ref sensors and the injector harnes was the problem...don't know which since I replaced both at the same time.

Sounds like its definitely electrical - if it were a mechanical problem, then it wouldn't have run normally immediately before and after. Like others said, I'd start with the DME relay, especially because the DME relay only controls whether or not the engine is on, whereas some other things mentioned (AFM, injector harness, speed/reference sensors, etc) affect how the engine runs.

In case you haven't fixed your car yet, the problem with mine turned out to be the fuel pressure regulator. My car had the exact same symptoms you described. Hope this helps!

Apparently you can check to see if the FPR is going bad by seeing if fuel comes out of the vacuum line attached to it. No gas was coming out of mine, but the vac line did smell like gas.
Good luck!

I'm having the same problem, the car just loses power but if i reach under the dash and wiggle the dme
relay it comes back to life and when its ideling I can move the relay and it will die, confirms a dme
issue.
Just something to check! Good luck

When my car did had this problem I ended up putting in new ref sensors and taking them out of the bracket and all has been fine since. I have since change out the injector harnes w/ knock sensor and the ref sensor harness as well. Good luck!
