I found the Saratoga Sunroof guy. Any interest in NEW Saratogas?

hmmm....
Instead of volunteering what I'd be willing to pay, I'd rather know how cheaply the guy can produce them. Perhaps one could be acquired for $200. Remember, his original vendors added their profit to his charge.

One of the advantages to acrylic/lexan is that it's much easier to drill. That said, if that one acrylic dude could produce the windows and then market it as a DIY kit, you could keep cost down, as well as liability. Just make sure the window fits on its own...
And I'd still prefer the electric roof, thanks.
Can anyone post a pic of the mounting hardware for the original Saratogas?

I'd like to see this too.
Or, I was wondering if there'd be a way to retrofit the headliner from the standard sunroof, making a cutout.
Any ideas?
BTW, the guy I'm meeting with at the end of the mont recommends plexi over lexan for something like this. Lexan scratches easily and would require special coatings to make it scratch resistant.
Plus, he said this opens up a lot more options in terms of tint and finish.

If he is using plexi, I would imagine the price would be considerably less givin that we would have to find a source for hardware and sealing material. $300 for a plexi window and frame w/o hardware etc. seems reasonable. Now if this were an amazing example of a "new" saratoga-type sunroof, I would say it would be worth a bit more. It seems the interest in this is quite high, we may be looking at 10 tops of each finish, smoke, clear, dark smoke etc. Of course the fab guy needs to make his $$ on it, but depending on quality and fit, price and what it is worth to an individual will vary i am sure.

Rick just a thought to help this become a reality since price is a big part of the equation. As a way to keep things simple and cost down for your guy, would we want to consider window films?
Could quality window tinting films (like 3M Scotchtint) be used (on acrylic) as a way to deal with interior heat etc? The range of tints and performance of these products nowadays is pretty impressive. There are clear films that provide 100% uv blocking and they are also available in a wide range of tints/shades, from clear to dark smoke to silver/gold mirrored.
If this becomes more of a DIY project, where we install our own hardware and gasket etc, we could look into doing a GB on tinting film (or leave it to the indivdual to purchse what they want). Like that everybody could end up with the roof color of their choice and we would only need to have your guy cut the panels out of clear material.
Just something to maybe discuss with him.
And I would also prefer the electric roof.
Thanks for trying to make this happen.

Lou,
I don't think there will be much price differential in the tint as it will basically be the color of the material. I will be more interested in options for example:
mirror finish tint (personally I like this)
'frosted' finish in certain areas - interior where the hardware will go
edge treatment - routed for weather stripping?
holes for mouting hardware. Drilling this stuff (lexan/acrylic) is very tricky. It is very easy to crack and actually can be dangerous. The chips can be very sharp. I will want them to put the mounting holes.
If I can figure out a way to make it work with the factory headliner/hardware, this could be a DIY 'kit'. I need to get my hands on an old sunroof to experiment with.

Cool, sounds like you have all the angles covered
I guess the next step is to meet with him and get info/prices on all those specifics.
Maybe you can "borrow" a sunroof from one of the guys that are parting out cars?

Bottom line is that they are $1000 because of supply and demand. If you introduce more, the supply is up, demand is down, and price is down (good for us).
For most people here, it's a luxury item and I don't see many people going over $500 for one. I wouldn't. Id' be in for one under 500 with manual latches.

Another thing is that a lot of guys said $500 thinking in terms of a Saratoga - all hardware etc already mounted, so that it's just "take off the old roof, put on the new"
Some of the demand may drop if people have to drill, cut, etc (some DIY)
Time for a poll when you get pricing info?
Thanks for following up on this... would love to see it happen

I would go for 500.00 but I agree with aridop that it is a supply and demand issue for why the price is so high like oil omg.
Not to mention we are talking about a tinted piece of glass, its not like a better turbo or somthing for better performance but a hunk of glass. Nice glass don't get me wrong but glass.
