CV Joints?
The past few weeks my car has been making a very noticeable whineing sound on desceleration in gear, sound coming from the rear. When taken out of gear (coasting) you can hear repetitive knocking sound, not sure if it makes the whining sound when i hit the gas, it seems to go away but then again my exhaust could be drowning out the sound. Any ideas? I'v leaning towards my cv joints, I heard you can just flip them around and repack them with grease and theyll be fine for awhile... or could this be a totally different problem??

A whine on decel in gear is sometimes an issue with the ring/pinion backlash or depth. You get a whine because on decel the teeth are not mateing up as they should. I hope it's something else, but in my expierience, this has been the case in the past.

I have this whine in the 968, and 968s are infamous for having defective pinion bearings. But I have never heard this sound in a 944. Doesn't mean it never happens...
