Default Popping, wont rev , excessive exhaust = Lean?

Does that point to a lean condition?? From what I've read if it were rich it would still rev..

Only thing I'm getting white smoke (not loosing coolant and it doesn't smell like coolant) that smells like concentrated exhaust. It is leaving black crap all over the place (coming out of exhaust tip) - that is from too much fuel, right?

My FPR holds vac and I can't blow through it with vac applied... Fuel comes out of the fuel rail end cap. I can't find a fuel pressure gauge that will thread on locally. I will see how much gas comes out in a 1L bottle (should fill 30oz in ~30 seconds, right?)

edit:

I've been searching google for other cars with bosch motronic and unsuprisingly they share common problems (volvo/bmw) and it seems like some people with a similar problem as me had a stuck injector or a bad DME.. damn

Anyone have a spare 87 951 DME they could sell cheap? Or one I can swap and see if my computer is bad or not..

thanks

You're just having terrible luck with that car huh?

Popping and black crap normally means a rich condition. What are the new parts and aftermarket parts on the car?

Make sure your plug wires aren't arcing, and make sure the porcelin part of the spark plug is clean and not arcing. I had this problem before the Fest. Just cleaned the outside of the plug really well....problem gone !

Yeah.. this is being such a PITA. At first it would start then die. Then I got it to idle smoothly but not rev.. Then I got it to run well , died and wouldn't start. Rewired the injector clips and 1 reference sensor harness and now the car starts but runs like crap again.

The Porsche gods seem to know the worst time for problems to come

New parts are all seals, vac lines, hoses, clamps, couplings. I also replaced all 4 injector connectors and checked the wiring. The fuel filter is recent. New DME temp sender. New spark plug wires and spark plugs (ngk brp7es)

The aftermarket parts are the

TO4B turbo
MAF
ARC-2
fuel injector duty cycle / narrowband A/F gauge
Tial wastegate
Blazak Precsion rebuilt injectors (stock #34 or whatever they are)
lindsey black **** MBC

I'll go over the plug wires, plugs, all wiring again.

fwiw,I just messed with the ARC-2 and it doesn't change anything when I mess with the ***** while the car is running...I think I'll poke around there

edit :
I've heard of using 3/8th hose clamped onto the end of the fuel rail and the other end hooked up to a generic pressure gauge. I think I'll try that, anyone think its a bad idea?

stock rebuilt injectors.. "europroducts" chip. I'd like to replace them with 951max chips but am hesitant to spend any money on something unnessecary before the car runs right.

I think Clark's has a write up on how to make a fuel pressure adapter for the fuel rail so you can use the commonly available FP gages. I made one using an extra rail end cap.

While running pull each of the injector harnesses one at a time... if nothing changes when one is pulled then it seems like an FPR... either that or something is up with an injector.

today sucked until I fixed (mostly) the 951!

It was an obvious mistake (like it always is), I wired the wrong red wire on my arc-2 to the MAF. I was looking over everything while pissed off about something else and it dawned on me.

Now the car idles/revs but still runs rich. The vacuum is good too ! I am still getting black smoke out of the exhaust , I will fiddle with the POS arc-2 but I really think at this point the running rich is from the crappy chips/ the arc-2. I need to get some more mordern chips and get rid of the arc2

moral of the story is , i will now check wiring 5x over before I'm "done"

thanks for help guys

Do you have a copy of the factory workshop manual? If not, get one, and check every sensor.

My 944 used to do the same thing, but only when it warmed up. It was the FPR.

Congrats Mike! Glad to hear you licked it. You'll have to bring it by some time.
