Default What exhaust/header is this?

Hi guys,

I went to install my LR exhaust for my 83 NA and I noticed a couple odd things...

When I was ordering the exhaust I figured I had the MSDS header and ordered the exhaust to fit it. Turns out I totally overlooked that and I have a setup I don't know about.

The header and exhaust came on the car when I got it. I also noticed there is no O2 sensor... I guess the older 944s didn't have one?

So I took some photos using a flashlight as lighting so they turned out kinda weird. Hopefully you guys will be able to help me out.

FWIW this exhaust sounds like ***.

So should I just get the MSDS header so I can attach my LR exhaust?

Thanks in advance guys.

WTF?
It's straight pipes all the way back? Gotta be louder than crap too.

You are supposed to have an O2 sensor, all 944's had one. If you are running without one you're just wasting gas. I don't recognize the exhaust at all.

No thats just a bad pic. Theres a muffler on there. Clark's garage says under the O2 sensor section: "For 944s which are equipped with oxygen sensors (not all are)," So I guess not all had one??

I think that's the first generation Bursch header. Bursch stopped making that in honor of there 4-2-1 collector setup which is similar to the factory's down pipe. The old header killed low end torque.

I think I'm just going to get a MSDS header so I can use my exhaust.

The Bursh I installed years ago was really long. The car had to be jacked up very high to get enough clearance to swing the rear of the header up under the chassis. It also was used with either a test pipe or cat.

I have seen many euro 944's without o2 sensors or cats, but none in the USA. I think the o2 delete was a ROW thing. All US models should have an o2 sensor.

Having said that the US '83 model is an odd one, so I could be wrong.

If you install the O2 sensor, make sure there's somewhere to attach it to on the other end. Are there hanging wires or anything where the sensor used to be?

on the firewall directly to the right of the head, ther should be a yellowish plastic piece that is in a clip. On the end of that plastic piece is a bar metal connector, where the o2 sensor plugs in. (at least on my 84 944). i think it has a green wire leading to it.. check the firewall above the motor and to the right of the head(if looking at it from the front of the car)
