The shops in my area all charge 2 hours of labor for the retension.

I would think you'd want to use a shop that's familiar with the process on a 944. Even the Porsche dealers around here don't know it as well as the import specialist who takes care of a lot of old 944s and 928s. The dealers are more familiar with Cayennes and 997s.

At my shop, if you have the belt done there, they'll do the retension free.

Dealer techs are typically trained 8 years back, meaning that most Porsche techs are trained to work on cars as old as 2000. Some dealers will still take care of 993's, but a lot don't want to touch anything older than that. Take a 944 to a dealer, and they will probably laugh at you because they have no clue as to how to work on it anymore.

Two hours labor is probably $150 or more. For less than the price of one retension, you could buy the Arnnworx tool and do your own, if you're mechanically inclined. If you're not mechanically inclined, let us know where you're at, and somebody could probably recommend a good shop to do it.

My Shop in Santa Barbara also did the retension for free.

First rate shop if anyone needs work in this area, I don't know if it's OK to mention names in this string.
