Default weird starting problem

let me begin by saying that this problem is not on a 944, but on my brothers 2000 chevy silverado. i am posting this because i thought that someone here might still have some knowledge to help him.

his truck has a completely random problem where somtimes the starter will crank for about 5 seconds without it starting. other times it will start immediately. there is no pattern. so far all we can figure out is that there must be some problem with the fuel delivery at some point that sometimes causes it to turn over with no fuel to start it. after the car starts there is no rough idle and no hesitation of any type. it runs completely normal. has anyone had a problem like this/know the answer?

on 944 there is a check valve after the fuel pump to keep the fuel rail filled with gas all the time. I think it's on every car/truck... Maybe this valve leaks?

GM trucks are very sensitive to fuel pressure. I know on the S-series blazers, The pump is supposed to have 44 psi when key is turned on, and a psi as low as 40 will cause extended crank times. Do a key on pressure test and a running pressure test and compare with OE specs. If you need them I can get for you when I get to the shop in the A.M. Just send me a PM.
