Knocking
Well, I started the 944 for the first time in about 3 months (had a post on the engine knocking for about 20 secinds then stopping). The car was constantly knocking now like bam bam with a tin can. Looks like it's time for a rebuild.
Is there anything I can do that will improve reliability or power?
Right now I want euro pistons if they are available and a cross-drilled cam shaft. Anything else I should do?

Have everything looked over if you really think its gone bad. Might just be a random knock, not associated with pinging or bad bearings (like maybe a lifter as mentioned).

A lifter woudl be a top end knock like a valve tapping sound, this is a REAL knock... it's definitely the low end. It has 147,000 on the clock right now with mostly autocrossing and tracking, so I'm not too surprised.
I'm not sure what the charge will be, but doing minor mods would be good while they're in there. There's a great engine builder in town that does a lot of turbo and 911 stuff, Pat Williams, so I'll give them a call.
If i did an 89 944 engine, would that work? I believe the ECU is different, what else would need changed.

Do you think Pat will touch a 944 n/a? He's a great guy and does amazing work, but he's avoided working on my car in the past. I think he's just caught up with making fully restored or complete track car 911 turbos. Did you see his yellow bird replica? I'm thinking about euro pistons for the near future also. Found any sources?

No sources for anything yet... it was an idea.
I've seen 944 turbos Pat has done and they are amazing, but he may have moved out of the field. I'll have to see what's wrong first I guess. I may be retiring the car as it's not worth that much other than the exhaust and the transaxle isn't that old and a new clutch. I may be looking into parting it out, just depends. I've put so much in it, and it's just slowly dieing.

89 has a different block/head/pistons/intake/ecu- as far as i know the rest is the same. My 89 was a 2.7 and i sent the bottom end to have the rods reconditioned, had the pan welded w/ baffle, crossdrilled the crank, had them assemble the bottom end and i put the rest together all new w/ hand lapped in valves and it cost me about $2k w/ new belts, castor blocks and misc other improvements.

Well, I talked to my usual shop and they agree that with the symptoms it's probably the #2 spun or in the process of spinning. i asked for the cheapest route and they said new engine.
He actually has a friend's wrecked car he bought for the tranny and the engine has been sitting with the car behind his shop since August. It's an 84 with 80,000 miles in good condition. He offered the engine for $650 or $1900 installed.
I'd really like the baffled pan if I can find one, where can I get that? Can I just bolt up a turbo pan or do I have to have it welded?

I don't have another yet. For now I'll probably get a MKI MR2 of the late 80's to run at the track. Hopefully the next porsche will be a turbo someday... or a cayman when I can afford that.
