Starter problem
87 944S.
Saturday I try to start the car and nothing at all happened, gauge was just above 12 v so I jumped it and still nothing. Push started the car and drove it home.
Tried to test my starter at OReilleys ... didn't work, machine said test on car. Bought rebuilt starter and made them test it so that I saw it work before I left the store. Install new starter... still nothing. Ran wire to the solenoid, touch it to the pos battery post still nothing.
When I turn the ignition switch to the "start" position I can hear a thing or 2 click in the glovebox area, possibly in front of the firewall, but no starter... that tells me that the ignition switch must be working. I also have power to the starter, because my son connected the battery too soon and I made one hell of an arc while tightening the cable on the starter.
Any ideas as to what I've missed?

If you applied 12V straight from the + on the battery to the solenoid and it did not engage, id say that the solenoid is bad as well and/or the starter isnt grounded. But hard to believe since you had it tested initially and the same thing is happening on you original starter. But check the ground of the battery/starter harness. heres a diagram if it helps.
