Default NADA value guy smoking something?

So after the longest battle with the Mass. RMV i finally get everything inline for registering the 83 and come to my surprise, i get charged sales tax for $5000. So I'm thinking that can't be right but at this point i pay it because if anyone knows the RMV, you would rather be getting beaten with a bat then deal with them.

So i get to work, look up the NADA and the low book is $5000, when did that happen? Is it because its now 25 years old and considered a classic. I don't think anyone has paid $5000 for an early car unless it comes with a hooker in the passenger seat since 1990.

What are you guys getting for you cars as far as value on the resale? I got mine for peanuts granted it needed a lot of work.

By the way, I'll have pics of the car for you guys after this weekend when i go home. I Have taken some during the project but i haven't had a chance to load them as i go...

Yes, it seems that when the car reaches over 20 years old, NADA moves it to the classic side, and if it's a desirable car, the value starts to go back up.

Mine came with a hooker and I still only paid $3500 for it.

'Course she turned out to be a dude, so maybe that hurt the value.

For private party used cars California uses the sales price as supplied by the buyer for the tax base. You wouldn't believe how many $500 cars I have bought over the years

just show the reciept, they can not argue with that...

-you could also do a 'trade' where no money was exchanged... (but it does raise a red flag)

You pay sales tax on a private party sale?

Yep, when you register it. The bill of sale usually reflects something other than the actual price paid.

In NY about 20years ago (man it was that long ago) the guy at DMV didnt like the value on the receipt and he pulled out a book.

I asked him if the book showed the dented fender and blue smoke from the exhaust. he still didnt like the value of this two year old skyhawk and he called a manager. they asked to see the car. i told them fine but it was 30 miles away.

you mean it isnt here? yes thats what i mean, it isnt registered so it isnt here. it isnt legal to be on the road. it is in a shop.

he then questioned the sellers signature. She had a drink before she signed it, what can i tell ya.

where is she? back in nebraska, see its a nebraska title, she moved to NY and didnt make it as an actress and she parked her car in manhattan and i bought it.

OK. pay tax on the receipt amount.

that'smy story and im stiking to it!!

We pay "use" tax in MI, not sales tax, on private party sales collected when the car is titled.

Yea in MA you pay tax on the book value regardless of what the bill of sale says. I mean it makes sense when you look at it from the states point of view, but from mine, for a state that dumped an ***-load of tea into the harbor to protest taxes, they kinda pulled a 180 on everyone over the years.....

No sales tax on private party sales in Az.... But vehicle license tax can ran from $30 to $500 to $1000 per year depending on the assessed value of the car. Of course that does go down over time so my newer cars we pay ALOT more than a 20 year old even if it was 47k new. (like my turbo S was stickered at)

Dont come north east. In colorado I got hit with sales tax on the purchase price of the BMW then i got whacked with a license fee that is about 2.5% of the value of a new car, and goes down from there. That's why i didnt lease when i got out here and bought the used 330 instead. if i leased a 40k car it would have been 1000 to put tags on it. that adds 100 a month to the lease. screw that, i paid about half to register the 45k 7 year old bmw which over three years gave me about 1000-1500 to repair the old car instead of having a warranty on the new.

This used vehicle tax is simply a legal mugging by the government. Why pay tax AGAIN on a vehicle that has already had the initial sales tax paid on it? I used to think that people who cheated on their taxes were scum *****. Now I think of them as folk heros...
