Post Temp gauge problem

I have a 1987 924S. I have read the numerous posts about temp gauge issues and the ground usually being the biggest culprit. My temp gauge fluctuates with anything electrical that I turn on or off. It even creep up to the high end of the guage after running for a little bit. The car is definitely not overheating. So From what I have read I should check the ground located on the driver's side above the fuse panel, the back of the temp gauge itself (something about the connectors being tight), and then check the temp sending unit. Is there anything I am missing? I want the guage to read correctly and stop moving when I turn stuff on or off.
