My guage cluster is acting up: Fuel and volt were erratic then dead. I clead all the usual terminals without success.

I want to buy a good used cluster.

Will a 1986 Porsche 944S cluster (944-641-311-02) fit my 1985.5 Porsche 944?

The 944S were not built in 86. They were built in 87 and 88. The tachometer is also different than a regular 8V 944. The gauge cluster will fit fine if your just using the fuel and voltage gauges. I dont think the S tachometer will work though.

Thanks. When I look at the guages in the cluster of both, they are identical in numbers and functions.

You can pull each gauge set out of its socket and put it in the original one and they should be identical.

That's one way to go if I can get a cheap cluster with a good fuel guage and voltmeter!!
